There is a lot in here on this problem. Mine did it again the other day. Patience and keep trying the eject button, I finally was able by pushing the eject pushing in and up on the cart. and finally I was able to hook a fingernail on the edge of the cart while I pushed the eject button and it came out. I then put it back in and the CD worked again.

I messed around more yesterday, still cant get the dang thing out, and gave up. This morning I ordered a new head unit from Crutchfield (Free ship, free harness, free mounting kit)

I like the idea of the front USB input, easy to play all my music. And the harness says it will still use the JBL amp with the head unit pre-amps.

Crutchfield says this model will not fit '97 '98 Mark VIII? Do you have an earlier year model?

I have a '94, single DIN crutchfield says it will fit in my '94 and gave me all the hardware

What about speakers ?
Is yours the JBL setup?

When I did my 93 I just rewired the whole thing.

According to Crutchfield, the harness they supply will hook back up with the JBL amp thru the pre-amp outputs on the head unit. I have had good results with Crutchfield in the past so I dont anticipate any problems. I have replaced all the speakers already. with aftermarket 6x8's

Dont do it.
Bypass the amp.
Rewire the whole mess.
Its well worth the effort and will sound ALOT better.

The HU you bought will sound better on its own.
The factory crap is 16 years old.
Believe me I have been down this road.

yes, ditch the entire stock sys and rewire it all. ford has the front and rear speakers wired in series. only thing from the stock system im using is the the speaker holes.
