ok today my 97 viii cut off while driving.... wouldnt start back up. My display now says__ gear shift display error
temp. error
engine just keeps spinning, tried starting fluid, nothing. I have no idea where to start any ideas would b helpful. THANKS

Hmmmm.... sounds like an ECM issue... that's the only thing I could think that would give you those errors.

Check the PCM fuse, I agree it sounds like a PCM issue.

its under the hood in the power distribution block next to the battery
which fuse position I cant tell you, but it should be fairly obvious which one is blown.
IF it's not a blown fuse it might be a bad PCM

ok so the pcm is the same as ecm? i know ecm & ecu means the same.. could i use a ecm off a 1st GEN in my 97 ?(bunch of those in junk yard) Called auto places they said i need to give them vin # to price and order a new 1..

It needs to be a 97 to work right....

ok. checked fuses and relays no start. same errors (fuel flow data, gear data display, engine temp display) ?????Any other ideas??????How much does a new pcm cost? and how much 4 yours kustom?

I don't know why I didn't think of that.... (smacks forehead) ..... unplug and plug the crank position sensor back in... wow I'm an idiot.

my '97 did the same thing to me a few years back.

it was the Crank Position Sensor

problem solved

when your 97 did this...did it have alot of erroneous information showing up in the message center as the original poster described?

A Typical 'no start' issue is often the crank sensor, but I haven't seen message center display errors included in those symptoms.

The only time I have seen the message center doing stupid things is when I'm flashing a tune to the PCM with my Xcal.
Since the xcal interupts the network the pcm talks on

my 98 did that when I was flashing the pcm with the sniper. I reflashed it and never saw it again only when I am in the process of flashing it. Has to be pcm related.

when this did happen, the EVIC said "Traction Control InOp" and something else i dont remember. at first i just popped the hood and jiggled the wire going to the CPS, and got in the car and it started right up. then i drove it to the shop and had a new one installed

took a hospital time out (gettin old) LOL. played with cps still the same. i will prob change that after shes gets goin again... big THANKS for all help & ideas u guys have given me
