2001 LS bogging issue**HELP**

hello guys,
I've been a long lurker to this site for maybe a year(since I started having issues with my car. I purchased my 2001 Lincoln just under 3yrs ago and it has been great. Within the last few months i've had it at the dealer a total of 3 times.
First time was because the car began to jerk on the freeway.
I went online and found this site, and because of you guys I figured it out that the valve cover gaskets were bad.
Lucky for my I have aftermarket insurance and they fix it all as long as I pay the $100 co-pay.
So I have the VCG replaced as well as the coils.
2days later the car was acting the same.
Took it back and they found a vaccum line crimped that they caused reinstalling the valve covers.
Car was fine for 2 months, then.....

Whenever i'm on the freeway and the car goes into final gear(5th. it's an auto) it starts bogging and huffing.....like it's hesitating.
Took it into the dealer and they couldn't find ANYTHING!!!!
I was told the computer scan revealed the shift points were off:( :( and everything is now ok.
Picked it up.....
Drove it over the weekend......
Same issue.......bogging and hesitating....
I bought this car for my wife and it's pissing me off.
I love the car......and plan on keeping it, but if things keep going wrong I have no choice but to trade in for an import. Can't have the wife stranded all the time with this.

Can anyone tell me what is really up with this car?????
what's the reason for the bogging in final gear???
Dealer can't find anything wrong, and my warranty is up in APR. 09

Transmission reflash? Have you tried just unplugging your battery overnight and letting your adaptive learning reset? I'd try that first. I don't know why your trans is acting up, I'm just guessing. But since you mentioned shift points, that's one thing the adaptive learning changes.
 
to be honest, I don't beleive it has anything to do with shift points.
This is just what my Lincoln dealer is telling me.
I dropped it off telling them that as I get on the freeway and the car reaches final gear it starts to hesitate, almost like a slight jerking action, or a misfire.
They claim to have test drove and found nothing.
I am afriad the car only does this when it's really warmed up, and the dealer drove it around the block and found no issues.
Also, when I put the car in reverse it jerks into gear.
I have friends with LS's and have shifted the gears in their's and it is smooth.
Even a friend who has 130k on his doesn't do this.
I only have 77k on my 2001
The car drives fine other than this bogging issue into final gear.
I'm just worried because I have warranty up to 85k or Apr.09
Which is coming up soon, and then i'll be paying out of pocket.
I plan on dropping it off again this week, but i'm not sure the dealer will be able to even DIAGNOSE the problem due to NO bad codes in the computer currently.
 
will it cause the final gear to kind of jerk?
Basically, I get on the freeway and pickup speed.
As it hit's final gear(5th) it starts jerking and bogging, like a loss of power and does not want to pull anymore.
I bought this car for the wife and she says every so often it will not allow the rpm gauge to go past 2000rpm.
She claims it will start jerking and then not allow the car to go any higher than 2k rpms.
So that.....plus the jerking in final gear.

I have warranty until 85k or Apr. 09
I currently have 77k, so time is coming up and if more issues arrise i'll be paying out of pocket.

Any help is appreciated.
 
Jut a random question since I had a problem with the bogging on one of my first cars... when was the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Now that I think about it more, maybe it's the solenoid pack in the trans.

Again, I'm no mechanic. I'm just throwing things out there.
 
if you manually downshift will it then accelerate? what happenes if you floor it? what if you drive in 4?
 
mine jerks in reverse too, someone once said its a messed up solenoid or somthing, but I think thats a different issue altogether.

Haven't done the downshift to 4th yet, but i'll give it a try today.
I think i've read on here somewhere about tranny solenoid issues, not positive, but hoping more will chime in here to help.

I'm only asking because it seems the dealer isn't doing it's job correct, and I figure if I go in to drop off the car and can tell my service guy what to look at, maybe they'l be able to fix this.

i just wonder if the "jerking" is the converter locking and unlocking. if you jump off the hwy and come to a stop fairly quickly, does it try to die?
 
well, no........doesn't do that.
It has actually done that in the past that I can recall. It would idle really low and almost cut off.
Now it just seems to be the final gear thing.
Maybe it's just time to trade it in?
I love the looks of it, even went and dumped almost 3k on wheels for it.
 
I'm bettin on a bad coil. Only does it when hot, and only in highest gear which is when the torque converter is locked. When the converter is locked you feel more of what the engine is doing because it is then mechanically linked to the transmission input shaft. Try kicking the shifter over in D4 when it does that and see if it goes away. Also, try a couple full throttle runs from a dead stop and see if you notice any kind of jerking/lurching or lack of power.

if it is that......
i'm pissed because I had all the plugs, coils, and valve cover gaskets replaced about 5,000 miles ago at the dealer.
Should they fail arleady again?
 
They could. These coils suck. And there's also the possibility that they just didn't replace all of them, then told you they did.
 
ok so I drove it today and waited till I got hesitation in final gear.
When it did, I popped it from D5 over to D4......(as suggested by outkast1300)
And it seemed to pull just fine without hesitation down in D4......
Looks like it only does this in D5 when final gear is reached.
So it's this, and whenever I start the car and put it in reverse I get a big JERK. It's weird......
Normally, when putting the car in reverse, you can actually feel the car slowly engage. Now it kind of just jerks into reverse about 2 seconds after you move the shifter to "R".

Any ideas with this new info??
 
You may in fact have a transmission issue then. Although I don't entirely understand how or why.
Check the condition of the fluid. You'll have to put the car up on ramps and remove the center star bolt in the middle of the drain plug on the transmission pan. Pull that and let it drain for just a few seconds at most, then put the plug back. It will be a fairly small stream, 1/4" maybe, so try to catch it with a small cup. If you do it right you shouldn't even need to add any back when you're done. Do that with the transmission warm right after it has been driven. You're trying to get just enough fluid to gauge the color (should be clear bright red) and smell to see if it's burnt or if there is any trace of metal.

Hopefully it will be clean and any traces of silver (aluminum shavings) will be minimal.

that's the thing. The jerking in reverse issue is what caused me to think the fluid was low or bad, so I racked the car(I run a goodyear shop here in CA) and decided to replace the fluid. It wasn't LOW or DIRTY(this was about 3months ago that I replaced). After the fluid was replaced I figured the jerking in reverse would stop.....nope. So i'm clueless now.
I've got a buddy with an LS and his has over 130k on it and does not do this.
I can't come up with anything at my shop, and looks like the dealer can't either.

Again, the car "jerks" pretty hard when put into reverse, and when the car reaches final gear on the freeway, it feels like it hesitates and boggs. When popped over to D4 it's ok, but in D5 it starts popping almost like a misfire.
I thought it may be a coil or plug, but if so, wouldn't it do it if I shift to D4??
And also why would it only do it in final gear?

Sorry for bugging, but as I said........i've got 77K and warranty is up at 85K or Apr. 09
I've had it at the Lincoln dealer 4 times in 2008, and i'm afraid that as soon as the warranty is up something major is gonna go wrong causing me a whole lotta $$$$
 
ok, so I just learned something else......
The wife forgot to mention this......great!!!
She says that a few times when driving the power will cut down and the car will not go above 2000rpms.She says not matter how much she tries to floor it, the car won't go over 2krpms.
If the stops and let's the car sit for a while it goes away.
Also, she says it's done this twice........and both times the digital diagnostic screen(the info thing) will flash something like "power loss" or something.
She can't remember exactly what it says because it will appear for 2seconds and go away.

Just adding this because maybe it's a useful connection to the above issues.
