OK, this is strange, I live in Atlanta and we just started getting premium gas again after a couple of weeks of short supply. I'm at half tank, heading to a restaurant to have a meal. Pinging is heard in the engine from low octane ignition, so I figured I got some bad gas. After dinner I try to start the car. Engine starts but will not idle without keeping pressure on accelerator. It will just die by itself. Crap!,,not only that but the transmission shifter locks up! So I'm trying to keep the engine going and trying to get the car into gear at the same time,,I have an automatic transmission. So I get it going FINALLY the shifter starts working,,,head to the nearest gas station and fill with premium. Drive two miles home with foot on the gas to keep the idle up so it won't die out, yeah it does,,,,so a block from the house it starts idling correctly, got it parked turned it off, tried to drive it again and no problems. So while this is all happening I get the phantom wipe with the windshield wipers. What a car. Never will I buy another American made car.

All cars I repeat All cars no matter where their made or who makes them have problems.

Make sure your fender port holes are not clogged too, if they are clogged your engine will not get any air.

Don't forget the IAC

I have a friend with a Nissan Altima with the exact same problem. I had a 86 Subaru XT that my parents purchased new and I sold two years ago with original 15k miles and 3 motors replacement (not to mention the countless other problems that kept if off the road). Toyota, there's a money pit brand. And talk about the countless Honda's that I had to work on over the years, simply underbuilt junk. So I think we should boycott all those cheap a$$ Jap cars too while we are at it. Don't even get me started on Krappy Korean cars. Also, I had a German VW and had to replace the brake pads so there's a testament on how much junk they are. I've never heard of or had problems with cars made in Russia, Mexico, and England so they must be the good stuff. Really, the only good cars are made in Italy, but I bet your too cheap to buy one. I don't even know why I would help someone who lives in America, and has nothing buy negative things to say about his fellow American workers product, and won't even buy a car made here. Wonder why the economy sucks? Maybe I want to help because misinformation is what propagates problems and as well as your unnecessary American dissent. If you do something that doesn't fix it because that you don't know for sure what the problem is, or my car is impossible to drive because I am too cheap to get it fix by a professional or learn to do maintainence myself, then it must be because American cars suck. I think the problem is more that just some American's suck and that is the root of many of the problems with all these brands of cars. Don't get me wrong, there is some junk out there, but every company has some.

Anyways, If you can hold the gas down and the car will run ok, then my guess would be IAC-Idle Air Control. I don't know how old your car is, but this is kind of an item that may need replaced every 5-10 years, no matter who made your car. If you want to help out the fuel pump, fuel filter is should be change every other year, and I know it needs to be replace because nobody replaces it until problems arise. I don't know what the issue with the shifter is, but It can't be that hard of a fix. If your selector doesn't match the transmission gear, its probably just an adjustment. My Lincoln dealership adjusted my for free when I had the oil changed and tires rotated a couple years back. If they charge for it, I can't imagine it would be too much. If its a broken shifter, how expensive would it be to replace it. I have seen countless shifters on ebay for less than $50. That's my 2 cents, which I am sure I'll get a dollars worth of replies.

Probably a vacuum leak. split hose = lean condition which = pinging + stalling at idle.

And check your muffler bearings, and don't forget to top off your blinker fluid.

Ha Ha Very funny

Who do you think you are anyway? We're here to help each other with problems not act like school kids, grow up.

Now the results,

Found the IAC to be carbon coated. I completely forgot about this device. Had the same issues with my BMW's IAC failure. Replaced today.

Replaced the fuel filter and added Heet additive.

Car runs fine now, except the fan pump is leaking from the main seal. :q:q:q:q.

Here are my complaints about this car. You may have had much better luck.

My Honda civic 101K miles, no failures or additional costs except normal maintenance items.
My Nissan Maxima 225K miles, alternator failure, window regulator, no additional costs except normal maintenance items.
My Lincoln LS (my favorite car) 100K miles $6000 in repairs includes a $3500 transmission replacement, nothing under warranty except harmonic balancer replacement.
This is my daily driver, never race or run the car hard. Everything started to fail after the warranty period ended.

Thanks for the suggestions about the fuel filter and IAC.

Best Regards.

i had to change the oil a few times. oh and i have to check the tire pressure like EVERY MONTH! look, you're the one who jumped into a forum about this car and complained that you are never buying american again because you can't tell your ass from a carburator.
well said cougar though - the faith in anything american is shot to hell - not sure why? i've ridden in 50000 civics and corollas and everything under the sun and i haven't seen anything stellar in them they have gaps, squeaks, leaks, and repairs. working in shops i always see more foreign autos than domestic but i chalk that up to more on the road and more people thinking they're invincible and don't have to take care of them. the only car that doesn't break down is the car never driven. a lot of the drivers on the road now saw their first car movie ending with the word "furious" and thusly have a holy aura surrounding japanese autos. i, by no means, am bashing anything foreign, supras and skylines are some of my favorite vehicles ever (not the newest skyline though --- bloated and i'd like to drive my car myself not the computer) but they're cars just like any other.

Had the same issues with my BMW's IAC failure.

Does that mean you wont ever buy foreign again either?

Well anyway, if you have that much carbon in the IAC I bet its built up other places and you could probably use a good old Seafoaming. You should try it out in the vacuum lines. It may stop you from having other problems and blaming them on the Americans that in some cases these days don't even create them.
