it seems like everything is going wrong lately with my car. 2weeks ago i hit a racoon, knocking my foglight and small grill piece out and tore up the black valence.... so my ls needs a clockspring now and a catalyic converter.... I had planned to get some magnaflow mufflers put on but all this has come up.... Should I buy a aftermarket converter or what... maybe a magnaflow... I only wanted to replace that one converter...
I love my car.... Im trying to make it last... Im a sophmore in college... My parents have asked me would i sell it.and get something newer... its a 2000v v8... What i want in exchange is a tall order... A Bmw 545i or 550i...lol
 
The tall order... is that because your parents pay for your car? If so, then I have 2 words for you... Em Five.
 
But if I were them, and my son was demanding a frickin BMW 545, I'd sell the LS, and get him a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera.
 
im not demanding a bmw..... My goal was to get that once i finished college..... Hoping my car would hold up til then... I actually dont want to have a Car Note.....right now.....The problem is the converter... Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should do about that...besides buying a $300 factory one.
 
Get a universal one off eBay if you plan to get rid of the car like you mentioned in your other thread.
 
Would an exhaust shop have some type of universal one on hand? That might be an option too...
 
i went to an exhaust shop this morning.. and i was told that they didnt make a universal converter for the ls..... inwhich i had already seen some on ebay...
 
Just because it cheap on ebay doesn't mean it has the right metals for you to pass smog... trust me don't waste your time and money... buy the factory one...

there is alot that goes in to a cat... the Size is one thing. then placement for proper heating and the stuff in side....

its 300 bucks because the metal used cost that much!

But a crapped out converter will set off the check engine light; which will cause your car to fail a regular state inspection.

Cheap aftermarket cats can also restrict exhaust flow and cuase you to have less power.
 
I didn't tell you this, but removing the cats and vigorously applying a length of 1/2 inch pipe to the 'honeycomb' material inside until it has all come apart and been shaken out will remove any drivability issues. Be aware that you may also have O2 sensor problems.

+1, Ken that works wonders!! You need a dummy rear 02 sensor if you gut the cat.
 
Thanks to all for their advice... So your saying that i should just try to remove the honeycombs, thus avoiding buying a new cat..? My main problem is my car rattles from the loose? honeycombs....

so are you saying ill have problems if i cut out my cats kus i was planing on doing that
 
Yes. There are O2 sensors behind the cats that are used to make sure the cats are working properly. If the cats aren't working properly your check engine light will stay lit. There are ways to trick your car's computer into thinking the cats are still working, but it is actually illegal to do so.

Plus, why dump more emissions into the air for everyone to have to breath when there's nothing really to gain? The LS is by no means a racecar so the small HP gains you would probably never notice anyways are negligible since you won't spend a lot of time running at upper RPM speeds, and the potential LOSS of torque due to less exhaust backpressure could cause you to lose power on the low end where it matters for everyday driving.
 
Just replace the cat... with factory; $300 isn't that bad.

Order a new fog light and peice back together your grill. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a new car.
