What is the best method for changing the trans fluid? In my other Fords I just let the fluid drain from the cooler line until it was a trickle then shut the car off. This way I knew all of the fluid was out.

Is this method a big no-no? How about the torque converter? I drain that via the plug, right?

When filling, how do I know I have fluid in the TC? Is it automatically put in there when filling from the trans dipstick?

TIA!

That sounds like a bad way to me... that means your running the transmission completely without any fluid in it.

Remove the oil pan. While you're at it, you can install a new transmission filter.
Remove the cap underneath the torque converter. Then, you'll need to turn the engine until the drain plug on the torque converter is accessible, remove the plug and drain all of that out.
And you'll also want to blow compressed air into the cooling lines so that you can purge out all the transmission fluid from the cooling lines and inside the radiator.

After that, replace it all with Mercon V. You don't want to mix the old Dextron Mercon with Mercon V

I figured as much. Just because i haven't had any trouble with that method in the past doesn't mean I won't.

Thanks!

I drain mine through the cooler line. I stop the car as soon as it first sputters. Thats what is suggested in the j-mod articles. As long as you shut it off as soon as it slows down you should be fine.

Ditto.

I've done it several times too; there's no evidence of harm done.

Just don't put it in gear...

Do it that way. It's a little more work than simply pumping it out - but it's not too hard and it's worth it.

tranny flush

I take a 3/8 drill bit and drill a hole in the left rear of the pan and when it drains than i take the pan off and outfit it with a drain plug. also0 dont forget to not drill deep, draqin the tq converter with the plug metioned before. also get yourself some updated accumulator pistons and valve body gasket,i prefer wix filters and some mercon 5 and you are good to go. if you need help with the accumulator pistons just search or go to the tccoa website.:)

I drop the pan after I pump it out. I just don't get showered this way. It's also important to drain the tc.

I ordered up a slew of parts from Max; 1-2 upgrade & springs 2-3 upper spring, and so on. I will be tackling this on this coming Friday/Saturday.
