Poor wanting to get some painting done on my mark

Hey all,
I am really broke but I really cant stand to see my Abe with the clear coming off the bumpers. My question to you all is

How much of a pain is it to take the bumpers off. Thinking about taking them off and dropping off to a buddy to paint in his garage.

Did a little surfing (lazy along with broke) the site for posts about it.

Any help would be appreached.
 
I have done the front. Not hard to take off, just takes a little time. The front has an upper "lip" that sorta hooks into the header panel at certain points along the top edge. That was the only hard part and once figured out was quick work. Otherwise just screws and such and it slides off.
 
what are you willing to spend, i could do it, in a weekend, all you have to do is pay for paint, and clearcoat and a little in my pocket to make it even worth writing this saying i can do it lol, but i dont know the condition of the rest of your paint, fresh black and clear on the bumpers may stand out like a sore thumb on the rest of the car!
 
god would love to do the whole car Jamie, I dont know what budget is slim for sure, If you wanted I would help sand and tape. The roof also has a few clear coats yucks in it all so. Just hate to take abe to maco but cant afford a regular paint job
 
maco would be a waste of money in my opinion. The front bumper isn't hard to take off and the rear is even easier. Since your car is black there should be no trouble matching it so you can always do one piece at a time as your budget allows. You can buy a quart of cheap black for about $20 reduced and then buy a universal clear such as transtar (definetly not the best but should last a wheile) in quarts as well for around $60. The nice thing about the universal clears such as transtar is that you can buy the "garage painters" version that goes to dust free in five min so that you can turn a relativly decent job out at home. I used some on a custom bike for a guy that already had bought the supplies a couple of years ago and it still looks real good, but it is always stored indoors and only see's summer weather as well.
 
Live near tampa Florida so the sun always shines well between rains in the summer, Abe hangs out in a hot parking lot all day, So I imagine its hard on the clear...Guess I will have to try to play around almost anything would look better than what it is now
 
With a steady hand a good eye a small brain and wetsanding, painting a car to look great isn't hard. It's the prep work before the paint that's work. And if you don't have many dings and no dents it'd be cake work. Don't be afraid to try it, being afraid is the only way you can mess it up. Just ask questions, and take your time.
 
I agree with ponies - It's all about the prep work. I saw a SHO way back that looked FANTASTIC - and it was done with excellent prep work, and rattle can paint!
 
I have heard alot of people talk about how easy body work and paint is. and I always tell them "if you think its so easy then why dont you do it yourself."
then they do and it always looks like crap. sadly they always seem to think that it turned out a work of art
 
exactly why i dont tell many people i can do it, because its not easy, it takes up a whole ton of time, it makes a mess, and it plain sucks. who ever says its easy doesnt paint much, its far from easy, its easy to make it look like complete crap sure, but to make it look good, its hard and you best know what you are doing.

i took my time with these two cars, probably a total of 100 hours in both, and they both only had a few dings, no real body work, and i still had a ton of labor in them, because my name was on them and if anyone ever asked, i wanted people to see my work.

and thats in an 800 sq foot shop with crap everywhere, i dont have a spray booth, i just hang plastic up and make a spray booth and wet the floor. works great but makes my life that much more misserable!!!

Shut up and poke your penis back into your pants. I've painted my whole mark twice, and if you want to count all the panel repairs after the fact you can say I've painted it 5. I've won best paint with my ghost flames and flawless finish, and I never painted a car prior.

the point is I dont critisise what you do for a living so dont be a jack ass about what I do.

dad gum kids, Jamie Pictures look great those look like pretty nice jobs. As i do work in a Rod and custom shop ill be the first to agree with HOTRODMARKVIII Prep is everything. You can be a first class painter but with out prep work a paint job is only good for a short time. Just long enough for the weather to change and edges start cracking or blended areas to start chipping. Its kind of like getting all your body work done on a hotrod for 400 bucks and paint for 500. I dont care who you are or whether your making money or not on the deal. Any job done under 1000 on a (show Quality job) is guareenteed to be junk in a year or less. If paying a grand per year for paint is ok with you than go for it but why not do it right the first time.
 
heres some proof of paint is only as good as who preped it. the blue one is a 49 ford f-1 we built and the second is a 55 ford f-100 that finished in the Final Four for Truck of the Year Late. Not too bad pending it was finished for almost 100grand less then the next best truck which wasnt a dime shy of a quarter mil well ill add the pics later i cant right now
 
Just a FYI on pix's of paint jobs.

Here's what happens. The lower resolution [640 X 480] that we need on forums so the screen doesn't get blown out hides really Super work.

With that said it also hides just OK work.

I am in no way making any judgments on the vehicles that have been posted here.

I will say this and have seen it on another site with a boat in the pix.
If you can see flaws in the pix, then it is really rough in person.
