Blown speakers

Last night I did the speaker test that was posted in a thread about all the things the LS does and I found that both front and rear driver side speakers are blown and crackle pretty bad.


What the hell would have caused both on that same side to go on me? Is it just irony or could there be something up?


I would like to replace them within a short amount of time but I'm not wasting my money if they have a chance of just going again.
 
More than likely they just need to be replaced. The speakers are paper cone and crack/dry rot pretty quick. All mine crackled until I replaced them.
 
What are the sizes I would need?

Front and rear left side.
2000 sport, 6 round magzine style cd changer.
 
yep. You're going to find more options in the 5x7 though.

Would it make much sense to get 2 5x7's, pull the right rear out and place it in the front left and add the new ones to the rear?
 
Yeah makes sense to do either fronts or backs together. Good idea.
 
However, when I did mine, I did the fronts first. I suppose it's all preference.
 
My best sound change came from the front speakers when I changed all 4 to some infinity units. You can run the fader front to rear and back and the most quality of sound was right up front. Night an day difference with all 4 of the same speakers installed.. So probably it would be best to locate the 2 good originals in the rear of the cabin.
 
I'm only going for a small upgrade since I need new stuff anyway but thanks.

If it werent for them blowing I wouldnt even touch them.

I think I will just put the stockers up front and get a better quality for the rear and be done with it till the fronts go.

I'm not a big stereo fanatic at all.
 
I did the small upgrade too, used Infinity Reference Speakers. Very clear and I hear they mesh very well with the stock ford system. If you look on crutchfield.com you can often find a buy one get one half off deal.
 
Thanks, Im looking ito that now. Do you know if they sell those in pairs?

$99.99, if thats a pair Im doing it right now but if not I may have to hold off a bit.
 
If you aren't THAT big into stereo equipment, just do as I did. Look around the local places and find a good deal. Best Buy ticked me off, so I was over at Wal Mart of all places and was going to get some wire connectors for a speaker install. They ended up having some Pioneer 6x8's for ~$56/pair. I picked up two pair and installed them the same day. I was having the same issue you had, but they were the front speakers crackling. Even for a fairly inexpensive pair of Pioneer speakers, they sound pretty good. This coming from a non-fan of Pioneer.

Jwerner,I've never seen mid range speakers priced individually. You always need to buy them in pairs. I'm guessing that hondo is for 2 speakers.
 
Could they just be wired to the rear deck or should they stay in the doors?
 
you could just tap into the factory wires on the doors. because routing the wire to the cabin from the door is difficult
 
Kinda off topic but I had one factory speaker go so I replaced it with another stocker. Now another speaker is ready to quit, and I think I'm just gonna unplug it and wait and see if more speakers go. 5 years of life out of a speaker is pretty awful. If more go I'm replacing with aftermarket speakers.

Thats what I am thinking on doing but will it decrease any sound or quality or anything?

Or, should I just get a second set for the rear deck?
 
will 6x9's fit? i wonder if anyone has tried, it should only be a clearance issue with the back. i need to replace mine to and was just wondering.

6x9 wont fit into the door as is. my 02 had the alpine system and the rear deck subs were 6x9. just about any speaker will fit in the rear deck with an adapter plate but remember the stock amp (at least in my case) only delivers a low pass signal, each side at 2 ohms. i always wished they put the subs in the door so that rear passengers dont get that aweful resonating bass from the 6x9's right in their ears.
i also reccomend the infinity reference 2-way as a replacement, dont waste your time with stock replacements.
infinity kappa's are a good replacement for someone planning to build a system.

It will decrease "the loudness" of the speakers in question but not the actually sound quality. The reason is because those speakers in question will now be sharing the wattage that once went to one speaker.

Say the rear passenger door was getting 30 watts rms but now since you split that to go to 2 speakers now it will be 15 watts going to each....in theory.

You won't loose any quality if you are taking the speakers out of the rear doors and switching them with 6x9's in the rear deck.
