I have recently switched out my standard shifter to the SST option. I have read on several threads that it is possible to reprogram the vehicle to allow the transmission to shift into D4. I have also read that the dealerships do not know how to reprogram it correctly. I would like to have it fixed to allow D4, but I do not want to waste time and money if it is not possible. Can someone explain exactly what needs to be done to correctly reprogram the vehicle.

I appreciate any recommendations...

I got no clue on what happened to the Title of this thread!

I typed

First off you need an understanding dealer. Then, it's pretty easy.

Plug the car into the WDS.
When the computer asks to verify the VIN, enter "No".
When asked for the "correct" VIN, enter the car's VIN (yea, I know you just said "no", but this is the way it works)
Now the computer will ask to pick a calibration from a list. Just pick a 50 state sport calibration.

That should do it!! The key is an understanding dealer.

Or making friends with head mechanic there, even the service manager. IF there is something you can offer them in return for service then thats all you need. Its all about who you know now a days.

I'd like to thank both of you for your replies.

I had mentioned that I wanted to reprogram the tranny and they did not think it was possible...

Yeah, I have tried with a Lincoln dealer and a Ford dealer to reflash the tranny, but they don't want to do it because its a V6 that never had this option. Sooner or later i'll find one who will.

Im pretty sure that it can be done through and SCT tuner.... I know my car has a pretty cool new trick it wasnt meant to have from the factory!

As long as you have a factory sport calibration......

well I know my 01 SST starts in first.... thats not factory for a 1st gen...any model. So I figure with the right codes, you could make it work

It is for other than USA cars......

true staement... im saying, if my car can get that, then I i would think the sct can do other tricks.... guess it depends on the quality and knowledge of the tuner

Torrie did the tune on my 02 LS8. He used a European calibration and now my SST goes into 1st. He said that it doesn't always work though.

Well, first you would need a PCM program that was FOR an LS that had the SST as a standard option. If you had that then the dealer could program your PCM to that code. When I switched my LS over to the SST the service manager that I took it to stated that the only way to re-program it is to acquire a program for a stock LS with the factory SST.

I beliver that Mike above stated this exact same thing.
