4.10 speedo corrector gear - who got the best price?

i already got the correct speedo gear for mine (entire old setup from the bird) i was making sure they didnt change from a gear to some other type of sensor. do you have a tune with your 4.10's? the reason i asked is when we threw the 3.73's in the bird years ago it stacked the shifts, you would be in 3rd by the time you crossed the intersection and the govoner would hit at i think 70 (should of been 105). i just dont wanna swap them into my 98 and end up going back to stock, cuz i aint got money for a tune right now
 
No a tune won't correct for a gear change in a 98, only 99+ ECU can do that. It is nice to change the rpm shift points and firm up the line pressure with gears though. The gen 2 doesn't need speedo gears period. I think it's because the speed is read off the abs sensor not the tranny or something like that.
 
ok is our tranny 7 or 8 tooth gears, i see that the white 23 tooth for the 4.10 is a jeep part - i got the purple gear. it has 21 teeth i guess???

i got underneeth the car yesterday, where is the bolt to get at the gear to switch? is it towards the tailshaft or where, a picture would be A mazing.

The way I drive I'm surprised that I don't destroy this one too. Plus you cant beat 3 bucks and there easy to do, just lift the drivers side and use a 10 mil to get the sensor out witch is on the tail shaft of the transmission housing. 10 –15 minutes tops.

my questions have been answered... except that I have 4.10 gears - is it worth it to keep replacing with that jeep part? or is it just a lil bit off with the purple 3.73 stock from ford gear? we shall soon see today!
 
wow your really need that speedo gear in if you have a gen 1 with 4.10's really woke my trans up, plus the added benefit of knowing the speed. ok and for who ever said it was a 10mm and real easy to do - was full of crud, its a 12mm bolt, and its at a crazy angle. it took me at least an hour because i didnt have the right tool, also the new piece didnt go on as snugly as the stock one but who knows, other than that its straight forward. get either a 3 inch extenstion and love scratching your arm on the third cat, or get a long extension wit a 12 mm socket with a pivoted socket and it will be a piece of cake 15 minute job. 12MM bolt, not 10MM
 
So I got the wrench size wrong sorry about that it was a few years ago. Stil only took me 15 min, no ext or u-joints. What did tooth size did you end up with?
 
yeah, i dont remember if its 10mm or12mm but when my gear was delivered at work , i installed it in the parking lot at work when my shift was done,it was 10 minutes tops.

like you said,its 1 bolt ,pull out swap gears stick back in and tighten.
 
yea its 12, and it is easy if you have no third cat and the wrists of this person:

rofl im sorry - all im sayin is that i got big arms and its hard to squeeze between that third cat and turn a wrench... i tried going through the suppot with an extension, but angle is such that you need a swivel. so if you dont have mary kate olson wrists, it becomes a pita but it is possible, but not in 10 minutes

yea they are good, guys not into mod motors, but referred me to the shop where i got my rear done up. he said he didnt have the time to do it... which i can understand if your getting big dollars for other stuff.

my guy told me i shouldn't need a driveshaft, and i havn't had bad vibes at all?? it only started to notice right after i got my tires rotated? its only noticable above 100. didnt used to be at all.

good to know,

above 100,probably means it would have vibrated at 130+mph with stock gears,not bad.
 
yea i guess i got lucky? theres a lot of other factors that make a mark 8 prone to vibration, there is a good article about it here

many many other factors in fact.... but a driveshaft isn't a bad idea - especially if you drag race a lot or like going insanely fast all the time on the highway. but for me - if you look into the other aspects before the driveshaft you can get your way through it, however if you just wanna spend the money and know that you have a superior driveshaft that will handle insane mmounts of hp... by all means go for the drive shaft immediately.

im working on the insane ammounts of hp first :-)
