... to my Mark.
I got back to Michigan the other weekend from a spring break trip down to New Orleans, and effectively my first ever real road trip. I went down there with a campus organization to do reconstruction work as a volunteer, and I opted to be a driver with my 13 year old car; the oldest car to make the journey.

I was kinda nervous about taking the Mark, in case something went wrong, she racked up over 2300 miles without a single major problem. I feel like this is sort of a rite (sp?) of passage for the car, and now I trust it a lot more.
New Orleans has a ton of pot holls, and the road surface is pretty uneven in places. I scraped my mufflers twice, caught my doors on the curb three times, and damaged a [stabilizer bar??], which I had checked out, but it isn't anything I have to have replaced soon. I also blew a tweeter and a speaker.
Driving around new orleans is insane, and not something to be undertaken by anyone suffering from high blood pressure. It also made me seriously reconsider whether I want to convert the car to the 1.5" lower coil kit this summer.

I was also worried that the exhaust drone would drive my passengers nuts (had two females), but in fact it didnt bother them, and they even liked the car and the vehicular stunts (long live RWD) we did on occasion.

The car is a good highway cruiser, and the people in the back seat slept well. The trunk had just enough room for 4 people's bags, including sleeping bags. Overall it was a good experience, and Im proud of the car.

I averaged 25mpg on the trip, generally driving at 75-80mph.
And while I have my own thread here, Id like to ask whether you guys think its worth it to get an Xcal tuner + tune if I'm thinking about keeping the stock 3.07 gears? I'd like more oomph, but is the tuner worth it w/o a gearing upgrade?

For anyone thinking the Mark VIII isnt a capable road trip car, I encourage you to try it.

No need for gears with a tuner. I have an Xcal 2 for my 96, and it really woke the car it. Its amazing how much faster it feels, wether it is or not, i dont know, but as long as it feels faster to me im happy.

Glad to hear you good luck on the road trip. I have taken my former marks on road trips before, and i wouldnt hesitate to do it again. In fact, im planning on making a trip to PA this summer. So much for keeping the mileage down....

My gf hates my mark, partly because of my obsession with it. Partly because now that its painted its like a pantydropper on wheels. Chicks love burnouts

Tell me about it.. and I haven't even shown a 1/10th of my obsession with my car when my girlie is around... she'd kill me and my car.. if she see's how i hug it before bed.. and......... :shifty: .. What.. no one else does this? Lol... If ya don't mind me asking RedHotMark.. how many miles is your car up to? I'm glad to hear someone is brave enough to take thier car that car.. here lately.. i'm afraid to over 3 foot from my lane and check the mail... grrr... Lol. Either way.. nice.. Not up here.. chicks love bmw's and 4x4s.. they just laugh and tell me I have a grandma car... it hurts my feelings....

My Mark is up to 99,000+ miles, coming up fast on the big 100k, which I think I'll celebrate with a tuner, custom sound system, and coil conversion.

Dark Majesty get a custom exhaust and some 17" or 18" wheels and it will really change how other people view your car. Heres how my car currently looks.

Oh yeah.. its about to get some exhaust.. i'm runnin straights right now.. soon i'll just find a way to put a set of super 44 series flows and dump them... with our cars so low.. and no clearance.. it will be a challenge to put under rear seat or before.. and just dump em off... I really want that... As far as rims.. I don't really want a custom set.. I want a set of a Lincoln LS.. thier black 5 spoke.. beautiful rims... I just want them to fit right.. lol... I could care less about girls.. i have mine.. but for her little brother that rides around for me.. lol!

LOL x2. That and the fact she thinks its 2 low and the seats aren't as comfy as the leather in the marquis. She wont like it when i sensor it.lol.....Better than her fu ckin aveo.

She says it has too much power and "its not like you use all that power anyway, all it does is make a lot of noise". That was the first and last time she bagged on the mark, she almost sh!t her pants going 125+ racing one of those altimas she loves.

oh and the hids and fresh paint have really gained a bunch of respect, i had a few people thinking it was a only a few years old

I recently took 2 co workers about 4 hours away from home for a conference. I too was wondering how they felt about riding in the Mark, but I wanted to drive, (as I always do) and they didnt, so off we went. To my suprise, they LOVED the Mark, loved the dual exhaust, sound, power it had, and the stereo too--Glad I have the mark, and they now wish they had a car as nice, w/o the payments :--)
