02 sensor time

Yeah- have a crows foot set available. That'll make it less miserable.
And unless you're particularly thin, expect to get scraped up.

Do you have a 96? If so, only the front ones are needed. The rears just make sure the cat does its job. Save a few buck and dont replace em! :D
 
There is also a kit you can "rent" from Autozone and such, its for O2 sensors. Probably works well like the crows foot set. But its designed with those wires in mind. Basically a socket with a side cut out of it.
 
I just did the 02's in my 94 & it was a B.C...AB car it's whole life Snow & Sea....so yeah rusty....But I have used the same trick on every vehicle....GET THE EXHAUST HOT by running the engine and buy the proper 02 tool for future use....then remove they come out as easy as sparkplugs:D

Ohh and wear good quality mechanix gloves & long sleeve shirt or have Burnt Hands & Arms....

They make a crow foot that is actually for 02 sensors, works really well. Even better, snap on makes an actual wrench for O2's, it a very nice piece.

Yeah you'll need some sort of crows foot. On the right side you wont have much room to work with, a small hammer came in handy for me.
 
Hey nut, I did mine about two years ago in my mark, easy way to do this is to remove the transmission, but I don't think you want to do that. I had a cheap wrench that I took to the grinding wheel and thinned down to get at the driver’s side. I can show you on sat what I made.

The hardest part for me was just plugging the SOB back in, all in all it was an 8 hour job. One hour to remove the exhaust and pass O2, and 7 hours to do the drivers side.

When I do the tranny in my new mark I'm replacing them no matter what, along with the cam sensor and the IAC. All that is nice and easy without the tranny there.

Eric I am going to call you I cant make it Sat, girl friend blew the shifter out of her 96 sunfire looks like Sat I will be working on that. :mad:
Stuck in third and the shifter is free must be linkage or a cable.:rolleyes:

As far as the o2s try a seafoam and then bring it in to have them throw the scanner on and check out the preformance of the sensor's

they had two different 02 sensors listed for my gen 1 95 base, one has a longer pigtail the other does not? i went with the shorter.

I went to Autozone and picked up the tool ... 21 and some change - plus i can take it back and get my money back, picked up a can of PB blaster and Liquid Wrench.

jacked the car up, jack stands of course tried getting my beastly hands to manuever the tool on the passenger side 02 sensor, i can just barely get it on there but not enough leverage to turn it.

so i called gene at lms to ask what in the world do i have to do? cuz at this point im lost.

he told me you have to drop the exhaust down - this is where i ran into problems and feared the rain and didnt want to go any further - also i thoght it was time to find someone with a lift, air tools and a blow torch - because this wasn't something that I was going to be able to do with hand tools, beer and a couple swear words....

I pb'd and liquid wrenched - wrapped with a hammer the passenger side exhaust flange that connects to the cat - its two 14 or 15 mm bolts (if someone could verify ide appreciate it) i know the one you cant even get to because the 02 is really in the way, gene said to use a universal, im guessing he ment wrench? or vice grips? for the end of the bolt, not to sure? man those things wouln't bug to save it's life - another tip he told me was to start the car and have it get real hot to be able to take those bolts off, ehh thats when i realized i wasn't equipped to do this job at the present time.

had everything not been all rusty on those cats and pipes, i would have been in the clear, dropped the exhaust no problem - but they look so terrible I called it quits right there so i can still drive it.

ok the pipe that connects the third cat to the two cats ( i guess this is what you guys call a Y pipe?) the driver side had bolts that looks i could seperate the Y pipe from the Cat, but the other side looks like it has some kinda weld on there holding it together

im not sure if this is what you take a part to get the cats to drop down to access the 02 sensors? or if he was talking about the two bolted flange that connects the exhaust manifold to the cats....

ive searched pretty heavy, i guess if you see rust on this stuff, dont even bother doing it because i gurantee you this is not a job that is easy by any means... I guess if you dont live up north this is a cake walk, but as for me the exhaust manifold and exhaust is a big pain in the ass in trying to get your hands on that 02 sensors
 
I only did my drivers side but getting the old sensor out was not a problem, the biggest PITA for me was the connector. There is also a clip that holds the wire and goes into a hole in the back of the head. After much head-scratching I looked in my tool box and I had 2 long spade type drill bits, I used these as manipulators to get my connector back together. Leave the clip off, it ain't worth the trouble. The whole thing took about 2 hrs, but I believe I could do another one in under an hour using my drill bit method. I know it sounds crazy, but it worked like a charm for me. It takes some patience but it can be done. Good Luck.

you have to drop the cats correct? theres no way you can do this with the exhaust in tact.
 
my one boy has a torch, and my other boy has air tools - :q:q:q:qs going down on that exhaust... i hope well be able to put stuff back together...

im guessing the best way to do this - is undo the four flange bolts and bam the cat comes off and then you can just take off the two 15mm bolts that hold the midpipe bracket.

if theres a better way let me know - i was stumped, and those rusty bolts wernt going anywhere

No, I didn't drop the exhaust I used this. Like I said it can be done, just takes a lot of patience and swearing. You use both of them kinda like somebody doing arthroscopic surgery.

Exactly, I did it laying on my back, if you had a lift it would be much easier.
 
yea getting the connects off isnt where im stuck at, im talking about removing 02 sensor fro the bung, i have the special tool and theres no room to even use it.

i going to go this route - since i really dont want to drop my exhaust.

Half inch Crows Foot 22m - connected to a half inch U-Joint (swivel) connected to a half inch 1 foot extension - then connect to a breaker bar or half inch drive ratchet - heat up bung with mapp gas torch using lots of heat and left loosey all day - to get the cplips off im going to use a long skinny flat head screw driver to do it.
 
i have a gen 1.. ill shoot some pictures so you can see there is no freakin room with out dropping the four exhaust mani flange bolts to be able to gain access to the 02 sensors using just the autozone special tool. the drill bits are a good idea to remove the clip - or two screw drivers whatever works.

because of the rust, the mapp gas torch is going to have to be a must. I'll post pics once I have a good feeling that I'll be able to do it.
