Finally getting around to doing some exhaust work. 2000 V8 Sport. I had the car on the lift today, and the shop told me 70 bucks to switch mufflers if i provide the materials. From what i gather, I like the magnaflow sound the best. I'm looking for something quiet at idle, but more mean when i get on it.

Question is, will i see any gain in hp by simply switching the mufflers? Or do i need to have them custom some 2.25" or 2.5" tube too? How much custom tubing (resonators back, cat back, etc.)? Just wondering if cat back would make any sense if i kept the resonators, since i think i would have to restrict back to the stock tube to use them.

If there is only a little difference (5 hp or less) from adding the bigger tube, i'll probably just do the mufflers.

Thanks for your input, guys.

hard to say really.

the mufflers i put on my stock piping seem to have added hp, how much im unsure of. never drivin a LSv8 with a magnaflow catback either.

If you want quiet at idle and louder at WOT, then the Magnaflows are what you want. There is a little drone in the car at highway speeds, but I don't mind that at all. Let's me know I'm driving a V8. ;) I have a video of mine with Magnaflows on YouTube if you wanna hear it.

As far as adding some "oomph", just changing mufflers can do that. Especially getting rid of stockers that are restrictive.

magnaflow aren't all what they are cracked up to be , but people come in asking
for them so thats what counts.

I had magnaflows on for about 3 days then had them replaced with something with more baffles

Yeah, please elaborate. From what i've read, most seem to be real happy. I don't need someone to hear me coming from 3 blocks away (that's what the sub in the trunk is for :D ). I'd hate to sound like all the jacked up Chevy Z71's with loud pipes around here. I just need something that when i step on it, it actually sounds like a V8.

MagnaFlows should work good for you. I have the whole cat-back and its not loud at all. When standing on it its heard but not real bad, my intake is louder.

Doing just mufflers will gain a few hp, better resonators or none a few more, bigger pipes a few more....all together works the best for the most power but just one I doubt it would be noticeable.

I have a '04 V-8. Did you do more than just the mufflers, and were you satisfied with the increased performance for the money? I'd like the link to your video, please.

There's now an X pipe right behind the transmission and I've painted the insides of the tips black. That's all that's changed since then.

Wish there was no rev limiter so you could actually hear how it sounds going through the RPMs, but it'll have to do until the XCAL shows up.

Thanks. I'm thinking that even if i choose to keep the stock pipes for now, i can still get the 2.5" in/out muffler and they can use a transition piece between the stock pipes and muffler, right? I'd hate to buy mufflers twice.

Should be able too. FYI the MagnaFlow cat-back system for 00-02 is 2.25" (they advertise it wrong). But if your just buying mufflers now and reusing them later obviously your not going to buy the system so you could use 2.5" if you want. But if your trying to somewhat duplicate the catback they sell in the long run, 2.25" is what it is and what they are.

Yes.

NYC LS8:

How much did you shell out for your system?

"until the XCAL shows up"

Did you order the 3? Got mine Friday, and will check out the custom performance tune this weekend. I'll wait and put the nitrous tune in when I go to my dyno appointment.

Initially 250-ish for the 3 mufflers and two tips. Gave the guy who owns the shop 100 for using some pipe and his lift. Then another 70-ish for the x pipe.

Haven't ordered anything as of yet. The woman says she's gonna order me one for Christmas. :D
