so i was driving my 95 mark 8 the other day to work when i hear the tell tale beep i take one look at the screen and i know im in trouble my temp gauge was pinged as high as it could go and before i could even pull over it dropped back down to normal temps  someone plz help me figure out whats wrong!

This seems to be the first post of all new members when they first sign on. This has been discussed numerous times. Change your waterpump and your thermostat to start with.

well i have had both the radiator and the thermostat replaced recently is it possible that they installed the wrong thermostat? that would cause the temp to skyrocket and then drop back down to normal right? also today i checked the oil its not cloudy. im at wits end trying to figure this out:mad:

Mine did the same thing. My guess is that you need more coolant. What is happening is there isn't enough coolant in the system, then the temp goes up. The reservoir then kicks in and and the needle cools down. Sounds like you have more water than coolant. There could also be air in the line. Unscrew the top which sits right in front of the alternator. You can use the rachet adapter to open it. With that off, run the car with the heat on high and add more coolant.

Air in the system?

Remove the cap from the coolant crossover tube.

Fill the tube with coolant.

Start the car.

Hit "Floor" on your EATC and set it to 90 degrees.

With the cap off, let the car run for 20 minutes to it get to operating temperature. This should get the air bubbles out of the system.

Shut off the engine.

Add more coolant to the tube (if necessary), and close the cap.

If you let it run for 20 minutes then it will bubble out of the x over tube, wont it? I did my friends 94 and we ran it for around 10-15 minutes and we lost a lot through the x over pipe as it warmed up, it just poured out as the t stat opened and closed.

oh, really? sounds like either wrong t-stat or not enough coolant. but what temp is the one they put in for you? oh and my plug at the top of that pipe is stuck in...i ruined a 1/4" ratchet, as well as a 3/8" - 1/4" stepdown trying to get it out, as well as i chewed it up with some vice grips. any other ideas short of oxyacetylene? lol

There is probably air in the system, follow the instructions in this post except for the part about running the car for 20 min with the cap off.

okay guys thanks for all the suggestions and tips, anyways I screwed off that cap on the coolent transfer line and started up the car, when the car started about a half cup of coolant spurted out no biggie, since i wasnt about to wait forever for it to come up to temp i took it for a short drive (5mins tops) and it seemed to be running even cooler than normal so i popped the hood again and gave the two front rubber hoses a squeeze to see if they even had any fluid in them and they didnt :Bang so im nearly positive that the thermostat is at fault now, so im taking her in tommarow to go bitch and moan to the guys who did the thermo and radiator job not too long ago, is there any other possible problem that i havent thought of??

Yeah.. Replace the crossover tube. Should be able to pick one up for relatively cheap.

If there is no coolant in there it's because it's low, You need to fill it up at the x over tube, then you can find a plastic funnel that you can basicly thread into the x over tube, while the car is running squeze the hoses to help to get the air out. once you don't see anymore bubbles, close her up.
