Transmission Removal Tips?

Pull rear half of exhaust. Pull aluminum transmission tunnel pan. Pull driveshaft and rear rubber driveshaft guibo assmebly, (and keep repective bolt and washer in the same holes,,, because it's supposedly a balanced assembly. Unbolt the center driveshaft support from underbody and pull driveshaft. Disconnect trans solenoid electrical connector from drivers front of trans. Disconnect trans shift linkage. Carefully and properly support engine with floor jack or jack stand, (with wooden blocks and rags so not to mar engine block or oil pan. Pull remaining bracketry and gently lower trans/engine assembly enough to get to bolts on bellhousing. Make sure you have clearance between engine and firewall,,, so you don't crush anything important. Unbolt trans from engine. Pull trans with the understanding that torque converter will still be bolted to engine flywheel/flex plate... and lining up trans pump with torque converter will take proper orientation and a good amount of twisting/wriggleing side to side, (or slightly rotating engine), when re-installing, Hoping you don't F-up the front pump seal on the trans.

This is the "short" answer to your question.

Now... if you know what you are doing,,, proceed. If you don't... take the vehicle to a REPUTABLE transmission shop in your area,,, and let them do the work.

Not trying to be a jerk,,, but if you have limited experience on R&R transmissions... you might just want to let someone else do the work.
 
Hello i have pulled all of the trans and 4 torq bolts drive shaft is off... The tranny is literally hanging out the bottom like theres some sort of bracket im missing. Hanging as in the car is raised 2 1/2 feet of ground and rear of tranny is touching ground all plugs and cables are off trans.. Note ..removed two wires from starter silinoid also... Please help is there a bracket or something i cant see?.. The starter is on the trans still.

What? The starter is attached to the engine, not the transmission. Please post of picture of this.

NOTE: If the transmission is to be removed for an extended period of time, support the engine with a safety stand and a wood block.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02 .
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .
  1. Remove the complete exhaust system and front heat shields. For additional information, refer to Section 309-00 .
  1. Remove the driveshaft. For additional information, refer to Section 205-01 .

    Using a suitable transmission jack, support the transmission.
  1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors and retaining clip from the RH pan rail and then position the connectors aside.

  1. Remove the HO2S connector from the front of the transmission pan rail.

  1. Remove the transmission insulator-to-extension center screw.

  1. Remove the transmission crossmember-to-floor pan screws and remove the transmission crossmember.

  1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable retainer and position it aside.

  1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable eyelet from the manual lever.

  1. Disconnect the wire harness from the top of the transmission shift cable bracket.

  1. Lower the transmission enough to gain access to the sensors. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor, output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and intermediate shaft speed sensor electrical connectors.

  1. Remove the transmission shift cable bracket screws and bracket.

  1. NOTE: Clean the area around connector to prevent contamination of the solenoid body connector.

    Remove the screw from the solenoid body connector and disconnect the connector.

  1. Disconnect the wire harness retainers.

  1. Remove and discard the tie strap from the digital transmission range (TR) sensor connector boot.

  1. Slide the rubber boot back and disconnect the digital TR sensor connector.

  1. Remove the screws and pushpins, then remove the splash shield.

  1. Disconnect the wire harness from the cooler line bracket.

  1. Disconnect the transmission cooler line bracket.

    CAUTION: Do not damage the cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fittings with a wrench.


    Disconnect the transmission cooler tubes.

  1. Remove the access cover.

  1. Remove the torque converter nuts.

  1. Carefully lower the transmission from the vehicle.
  1. Make sure the transmission fluid cooler and cooler lines are cleaned at this time.
    • Carry out the Transmission Fluid Cooler — Backflushing and Cleaning procedure if the transmission is being overhauled, or if installing a new or remanufactured transmission. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler — Backflushing and Cleaning in this section.
 
Having, early in life, worn myself out trying to get a transmission or two lined up properly to go back together, I have since made it a rule to pull both engine and trans as a unit. Ford put it in that way, learn from their experience.

(It usually helps to go all around the whole business several times looking, and even feeling, for whatever you've missed un-hooking. It often saves a whole bunch of feeling stupid. And, perhaps, breaking something.)

Another question i took one 13 nut of starter and one smaller nut. Should i disconnect the third nut on silinoid? Or does that wire run into starter like cadillac? Help, looks like it may be jammed up. I have raised and lowered that trans a dozen times already. Ive done trannys before never has it done this.
 
I see, said the blind man. You have the V6. Sorry, I assumed you had the V8, since this thread is about the V8. The removal is a bit different for the V6.

Do you mean solenoid? If so, the "M" terminal connects to a strap to the starter motor. The solenoid stays with the starter motor.
