Timing Tensioner Replacement

Hello,

I have a 2001 Lincoln LS that has bad tensioners, could someone point me in the right direction for help on replacing them? I am mechanically inclined and can tackle the job I just need some directions on doing so. Would a chilton manual do the trick? I will need something with pictures (lol) to understand everything. This will be by my first attempt fooling with a mod motor. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Search this forum. There is probably more info on it here than any other single place.
No, there is no Chiltons or similar for this.
This is not a job that you want to take on by yourself if you haven't torn into engines before and if you don't have a good collection of tools. There are still some specialized tools for this engine and this job that you will need. I know that the AJ shares some mod motor parts, but I don't think that it really counts as one.

depending on which side is bad.

I would recommend changing the secondary timing chain (the first link I provided), as it very well could have stretched links, and it's not that much more money since you're in there anyway.

I bought the chain and tensioner, and brought the parts to my mechanic. He charged me around 150-200 IIRC for the job.

Thank you very much. I was going to but these from the dealer and the tensioner is $130 a piece so the links you provided will save me some money. I am confident I can do the job if I had something pointing the way. I didn't think there was any specific tolls required unless you were changing the main timing chains.

Required may not be the exact right word, but having the tool to lock the cams makes it easier.

I think I have the tensioner replacement squared away. Is there a way to replace the secondary chain without removing the primary chains? I assume that's a stupid question but thought maybe someone might have a short cut. Thanks again for the help.

Hello, I'm hoping someone can chine in with some help here. I replaced the timing tensioners today and both secondary chains although neither of them seemed loose like they had stretched. The tensioners had a little play in them. Needless to say after getting the thing back together, there is a loud knock coming from the front near the upper intake.

Does anyone have an idea what that might be? I would like to figure out if the motor is toast prior to putting anymore money into it. Its a shame because the car is in decent shape. I only paid $800 but was told it only needed a tensioner. I'm starting to think I got jacked on it. Any advise is greatly appreciated

]I haven't had a chance to clean the motor, didn't want to put anymore time into it if the motor is shot. Its a short video but should do the trick. I hope the attachment works.
