Bondo + underhood engine compartment heat ???

does cured Bondo like excessive temp changes ???

after I posted I searched some and found a forum where some lads were doing some alterations to some VC with Bondo (who'dathunk)
and they seemed to go back and forth on claiming it did break down over the years ... <SHRUGS>

Time will tell.

Well if it fails I'll just have to do it again. <also shrugs> I tried silicone sealant and that didn't work too well; it's too flexible.

edit:
<Thinking.....> I wonder if JB Weld is an option.......

Don't want to rain on your parade but I have a feeling it will crack with all that underhood heat.
HOWEVER ... I have very little experience with Bondo, used it "once" on an old motorcycle gas tank many moons ago.

I don't expect it will be like this :) classic ford.

I wonder if fiberglass would have worked. It may hold up to the heat better. It might be hard to bond fiberglass to plastic though...

I thought about that too, though my idea was to cover the whole thing in fiberglass. Then I came to my senses and went with the Bondo. If it cracks I'll try and figure out something.......

If you spray paint it afterwards either in a trim black (which is matte finish) or something it should look nice for a while. I wonder how the bondo will hold up though. Maybe there is something out there that can act as a filler for high heat.

From the T-Bird board:

After several months of daily driving, my engine cover (with a moderate amount of Bondo work) still looks like it did the day I finished it - no issues at all.

LS4me, I'm not saying it's 'going' to crack, I'm saying, I have a concern it 'may' crack over time.
it looks good, a great underhood mod for a second Gen, go for it ... finish it off and only time will
tell if the bondo welding of the two plastic parts will hold up, who knows ... it may last forever.

Either way, you're ahead of the game and can always recover with a plan B should it crack on ya.

Keep up posted with the mod progress (pics) and then thereafter on how it holds up.

I do appreciate the warning which is why I asked. I will definitely be on the lookout for any cracking. I just went out there to check on whether I was going to need Mr. Dremel to knock down the high spots or if my 220 grit would work. I flexed the cover a little and everything held, so I guess we'll see!!

An alternative, when you have the piece finished the way you want you will have something that can be used as a mold for a fiberglass piece which would hold up. If you have a local piecemeal manufacturing shop around, you might be able to make up a batch of them and sell them here depending on how much it cost to make, and how many are made at that cost.

I would not be interested as I'm not a big fan of these cars (and won't miss mine when I do sell) but I do enjoy helping others work on theirs regardless of how I may feel about the car.

Thought about that. I just don't want to lose the Lincoln and V8 emblems.

Great work on the cover so far. This is going on my to do list.

Another option if you want to use the jag cover but loose the jaguar up front, you can fill the back with black resin which will bond to the cover, then just sand away until flat, add Lincoln logo of choice.

Thought about that, but new brackets have to be procured and there is that cut-out on the passenger side that would bother me to no end!!

Man I HATE sanding!!!!! About 4 coats of heavy build primer....... Getting there........

That looks awesome!!! Very nice work

Looks like it was designed by Apple. The all new iCar!

Glad to see this cover take shape. Get some good quality pics of it on the car. I'm already scoping out my cover to do my own custom fit. Glad to see where this thread went and see someone finally take the time to do it!
