It takes some effort to get a gen I to shift down to 1st. (It starts off in 2nd, unless you pretty much floor it.) Perhaps you shouldn't be pushing it that hard until after it has warmed up.

That would be in SST (which, as you well know :p the non-sports lack). Per the picture (acknowledging after your post) the OP has a non-sport V6. In auto mode the LS will always start in first.

BTW..... :W:W:W My daughter's (my old LS purchased new) V6 LS has over 180K miles and is running strong. The major failure you will have (other than coils/plugs) is the PCV hose/elbow under the lower intake manifold. Put on some sport shocks and 17, 18 or 19 inch wheels with high(er) performance rubber and really see the LS enjoying the twisties!! Enjoy your new LS!!!!!

Welcome to LVC! Get any history of maintenance? If not get ready to perform the normal parts replacements. CPOS, plugs, PCV valve, IMG set, VCG set. Good budget building time now! Now replace fuel filter, cabin filter, change oil/filter, air filter, clean MAF. Check age of battery and voltage, 13.4 good battery, any reading of 12v or below change. Get highest CA & CCA you can afford. Take car to one of the top parts stores to get a free charging system test. Plan on at least the drivers door lock and window regulator to break. Don't spend budget on mods until failure proned items are replaced. The basic LS comes with 16 in rims/tires, upgrading to the optional 17 in rim/tires later will give you a better riding vehicle with a good grade of tire. Just did my wife's tire/rim upgrade to 17 in with the best Cooper tires, can't believe the improvement in all driving situations. Check all ball joints and sway bar links front & rear. Check brake shoes front/rear. Front wear a lot faster then rear. Do a monthly check of all fluids to have a good idea how engine is performing and other systems. Any upgrade of rims/tires past +1 will greatly increase wear on wheel bearings and ultimate failure under certain driving situations. Stiffer sidewalls put more stress on bearings @ +2 or above sizes. Watch for trunk gasket leak, clean real good than wipe down with cloth soaked in break fluid. Also keep path/slot between taillight & trunk behind taillight lens cleared out from debris so water will drain. Plan on moisture to get into at least one headlight assembly if not both. Good luck & enjoy!
