So I hit a really low spot and decided to buy a Ford Escort for a cheap commuter. Found out a load of Intel on the chassis, and ordered a complete suspension overhaul. Pics speak louder than words. Haters need not comment.

Those were my LX, here are a couple of the GT I built. Mazdaspeed MX5 cams, heavily ported intake, 3" intake with PCM flash, and larger Kia injectors. Ate integras for breakfast and pooped civics.

I bought a 98 Escort wagon in September for a commuter car. I never knew you could mod these things. I'm getting 34 mpgs @ 70 with the A/C on. I found ZX2 seats and changed them out. I couldn't be happier.

The 2nd Gen (91-96) shares the same platform as the Mazda BG (323, protégé), and the engine from the MX5 miata in the GT models, so the aftermarket support is pretty good, at least for the second Gen GT. The third Gen (97-03) shared a similar chassis, as you can easily swap the front fascia.

Look into a ZVH swap. SPI bottom end, and the zetec head, offering decent compression, and dual cams. Very worth the money. Also makes boost a possibility.
 
For the record, the engine code for the GT which has a stock power output of 127hp, is the BP05. Definitely a worthwhile swap if you can't source a zetec, and they handle boost extremely well up to 14-16psi, then you need to lower the compression, and put forged internals. Peppy little engines for a FWD.

My GT, with the cams, intake mods, and flash was putting down 159.3hp/133.1lbs foot. I have the dyno sheet but its on my old computer that my bitch ex wife got in the divorce... it was pretty quick for an escort lol.
 
I'm happy the way it is. Great car for work and going to the junkyard. I think it's just as good as any foreign ecoco box. It just never got the following the foreign cars did.
