Something Weird? Not sure how to explain... Bare with me.

Ok 05 ls V8. 121k

up hill battle and high way cruise control. The car sometimes does this weird like pulsing. For example. Up hill under light accel, The is acting like its not sure if needs to down shift, or up shift. so I get this weird pulsing or jerkieness (made the word up) kinda like shaking an aerosol can before spraying (but no that extreme). I wouldn't think it would bucking or jerking as if a bad solenoid. This also happens on the highway with the cruise engaged.

So with that being said. Could it use a tune up? or could it really be a bad solenoid? I got the car in feb. Besides some very light exterior mods with DDM, Brakes, and oil change. I haven't done much to her yet.
 
Also, I get this weird clicking noise which Iv narrowed to the brakes. But it goes away when I apply the brake. and it only seems to happen when I am in reverse.
 
Not that it helps much, but I've been having the same issue using cruise control. I don't know if it's the LS's way of controlling speed going down hill but that's when I notice it the most. Been like that for a couple years now and when I had the solenoids swapped, it didn't fix it. You could rule out the solenoids if you were basing it off my experience alone.
 
Down hill is normal, its the pcm controlling the speed. Uphill, not so normal. When did u last replace ur coils and plugs? Did you also gap the plugs correctly? Are you getting and CELs? What speeds are you noticing this issue at? All speeds or high speeds? Does this happen when using SST? How about in D4?
 
I haven't replaced any COPS or Plugs yet. No lights, no check engine lights. Just D5, Iv maybe used the SST 4 times since I took ownership. I read on here that it kills the COPS faster (so I try to stay away from using). The stealership I bought the LS from said they replace some not all (I do realize I will need to replace all anyway and new that before). Which led me to believe it could be a COP and Plug issue. So Iv been gathering the funds in the mean time to get all new plugs and cops. Iv more or less been trying to decide on what to go with.
 
To add insult to injury, It seems to do this hesitation thingy between the rpms of 2k and 2500.
 
Yeah, I suspect the uphill problem is misfires.
 
When in doubt, pull out...the cops and plugs and replace with new. From what I've read on here, at the age/mileage you should have already gone through a whole set, not just a few here and there.
 
Right. Just wanted to get some thoughts. Figured I would be doing this at some point this summer...

Ok. What about the clicking Brakes?
 
Did this happen after you replaced the brakes or randomly? Does it always happen? Is it coming from the front or the rear?

I had bought the car with bad brakes, So I haven't the slightest clue if the noise was present before.

I replaced the rotors and pads and bled the calipers. the LS has completely new brake fluid. all old fluid is gone. I want to bleed again here soon. If It helps any. I have a lot more dust on the rear driver side (which where the sound, sounds like it coming from.) then any other. Barely anything on the front wheels. I didn't go the cheapest route however I didn't go with the best. and I'll be damned if I can remember what quality, and name brand I went with. Im not completely happy with the stuff I got too.

The clicking goes away when I apply the lightest pressure on the pedal. (brake) a
 
My guess is that either you left a bolt loose, or left out one or more of the spring clips on the pads.

The only spring clips I have come across where on drum brakes. Maybe I missed something on the ls, but was completely unaware of spring on pads. can you enlighten me?

The LAST thing I would do is toss a sticking caliper to the side! After a drive is that wheel too hot to touch? A sticking caliper will generate tons of heat and could melt the bead on the tire, boil the fluid or cause any other kinds of heat related damage!
 
I will take a drive. and test it out. You do make a very important point.
 
Careful with that. If the caliper is sticking, it will heat the wheel hot enough to burn the skin off your finger with just a quick fingertip tap. Ask me how I know this.

The spring clips are item 5 in each of the diagrams, 2 on the back and six on the front.
Note also that the back pads have a spring at the center built-in.

Well then... I replaced them. I bought a pack or kit to do all of them. Just didn't realize that was the technical term for those. But I drove home from work. Touched all the calipers and they were fine. I even tested reverse again and there was actually no ticking.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'm just going to upgrade and get new pads and have the new rotors resurfaced. And start all over again. Decrease everything and rebleed all. Next pay.

If it has some randomness to it as it is occurring. , it's probably a coil/spark related issue. I'd replace all the plugs and spark plug boots. Coils get blamed all the time, but I believe usually it's just the boot leaking spark. Always change the plug at the same time. If there's any oil in the wells, replace the valve cover gaskets.

If cyclic nature to it, it's probably a torque converter issue. I ran my car for 50,000 miles with a cyclic surge in 4th and 5th gear when rolling on the gas at highway speeds. The trans part of my PCM failed, the trans shop rebuilt the trans then figured out my PCM was bad, and after that the surge was gone. It seems to be fairly common for Jaguars with the same trans to have torque converter issues.
