Is torquing the valve covers necessary? I am doing the gaskets, plugs and cops. If necessary what is the sequence?

I don't have a torque wrench. Is the wrench I would need to buy a normal wrench I could use on a lot of applications? So 89 in lbs? 89/12 is about 7.5 ft lbs?

Yes, you will have other uses for it. Harbor Freight had them on sale for $19.99 just the other day. I don't know if they are still on sale.

Be sure to tighten them down in that order and only then go back and apply the specified torque in that same order.

Don't torque one bolt down to setting and then insert the next and torque it.
They have to all go down evenly at the same time.

I hope you understand what I mean by this.

Its a good idea, But it has been successfully done without many times.

I agree, but it all depends on if you have done such things enough that you have a good feel for how tight is tight enough and (more importantly) how tight is too tight.
