I just had my light come on Threw P0340. I guess thats the cam sensor something or other. I had my car not start one time a few years back and had it towed to a dealer. They charged me like 700 and told me it was the cam position thingie that went out.

I am wondering what the fix is for this code.

Thanks
Jeff

A bad cam position sensor cannot prevent your car from starting. A bad crank position sensor can, but not the cam. The worst it'll do when bad is cause your car to take a little while longer to start.

i thought that as well. but...

cam sensor doesn't cause a no start. i unplugged mine once. car didn't care.

False.

Without a cam sensor signal the EEC will "guess" based off the crank signal and it has a 50% chance of getting it right.

is that so? guess i just got lucky the couple of times i started it with it unhooked then.

You can even unplug the cam sensor once it is running and it will continue running.

The fix would be to reach under the power steering bottle and remove the 1 bolt, unplug the sensor, bolt the new sensor on and plug the wire back on, 1 minute job

$700- wow... I don't see a reason to ever take a Mark VIII to a dealership

Also, 700 to replace a cam sensor? Even if it were the slightly more annoying crank sensor I would have told them to keep the car for that much.
