Follow the story in the "The Car, Like, Blew Up" thread.

Did any of you find a cause for the back of the intake to blow out? Backfire, other problems that led to a backfire, etc.?

No idea how much these bad boys cost but guessing replacing it isn't going to be fun...

There's an old thread on here about that happening to someone else. The back part of the gen II manifold is metal. Is it the same for the gen I, or is it all plastic?

I know that it's not uncommon for there to be a pool of oil in the bottom of the intake manifold. I suppose something could ignite the vapors from that. I'm not sure what the ignition source would be. A really early firing of one of the plugs? I guess that could happen with a loose coil connector, wiring fault, or PCM problem.

Ah, thanks Joe.

Don't know about the material, my guy is still feeling around back there for the disc. The Gen 1 piece could be a similar composite like the manifold itself.

I know a cat is going bad so it has been running richer, don't know if that could cause a big backfire. No other codes. Hmm.

Gen I is all plastic. Interesting.....

Did gen II go to metal at the back to solve this, or was it so the same plastic manifold piece could be used for Jaguar (swap the metal back plate and the throttle body)?
