Hey all. I have been having issues with my Lincoln the day I received it. I have replaced small things here and there and it has fixed some of the issues. I however have been plagued with a CEL and constant stuttering issues. At first it was multiple Misfires on Cylinders 3,6,7. I replaced the coil pack and plug on cyl. 3 and the car would now not hesitate while accelerating (got rid of the surge of power). Now the car runs rough at idle, and I decided to replace the coil and plug on 6 and 7. So I replaced it, and the CEL went out for maybe a day. The CEL then came back on and I checked it, threw a bad 02 sensor. Cleared the light and drove for about another day.... the car is doing the same thing, with misfires on 6 and 7. The odd thing is that under 40 MPH the car is fine, over 50MPH is also fine... in between while under any kinda of acceleration I get a jerking, almost a kind of Misfire feeling ( Go figure ).

If you guys could please please please help. I really want to get this figured out. Im getting really tired it. Thanks all!

Chances are you haven't found all the coils that are bad. They don't always throw codes.

Replace all COPS and sparks. Then see if the O2 sensor problem comes back and check your cats.

Ditto!! You're chasing your tail replacing coils (there are NO coil PACKS) one at a time. Marginal/failing coils rarely throw a code and the electrical interference confuses the PCM as to which ones (or all) are actually bad. Replace the plugs also as coils will take out plugs and plugs will kill coils; it's a vicious circle.

BTW, searching would have yielded these same results. This is probably the LSes biggest Achilles' heel.

Thank you both for your replies.

I have searched before, but I figured I could hopefully get a specific answer based off of my weird scenario.

If I already replaced 3 out of the 8 and put new plugs in when I did it, should I just buy 5 more or just purchase a lot of 8 online and put all new ones in again? Thanks again for your responses!

Actually, your symptoms (outside of the O2 sensor) are classic coil issues.

As the PCM probably didn't really know which ones were marginal/failing under stress, I would do all 8 coils and plugs. Save the newer 3 as possible back-ups. Make sure you hear of feel a "click" when you install the connectors to the coils.

How many miles on the car? It just may be time for new O2 sensors. A (I don't remember the actual term) lazy or slow response code probably is a failing sensor. What was the specific code?

Also, make sure all the new plugs have a 1mm gap. Don't trust that they will be correctly gap'd out of the box (even though they say they are). Get the correct coils and the correct plugs.

Ill probably replace them as well, the car has 240K miles.

Thanks for the heads up on the Gap, ill make sure.

as mentioned, sounds exactly like a coil or two is still failing (not completely failed)

you mush have had a bad misfire if you are getting a CEL, i would say that 80% of coil related misfires do not produce a CEL unless they are REALLLLLY bad.

driving around with a misfire long enough will damage a cat, which very well could be your O2 sensor code.

it should also be noted that driving around long enough with a bad coil can cause damage to the PCM, so now just replacing the coil and plug may not fix the problem...

Fn COPS !!!

Wow. Someone drove the piss out of that car.

Yeah the car was driven a LOT. The things in really decent shape (besides this issue)

Cant complain as I got it for free.

I will get the COP's replaced and the plugs and report back. Thanks for all the help!

Still can't read too well huh Chris?
Hmmm ... let me see, (stupid it down a little for ya),

Misfiring LS ~ Replace all COPS and sparks.

COP also known as "Coil Over Plug"
x qty 6 or 8 = COPS (plural)

Prolonged driving with failing COPS results in damaged/plugged CATS

No one likes dealing with a bad COP

= Fn COPS !!!
