First, a little history on my car. It's a 04 V6 that I bought 2 years ago off the lot from a Lincoln dealer. I'm the second owner, the first being a 95 year old woman who serviced the car religiously. It now has 77,000 miles on it, 30,000 by me.
Last week, I'm on my 150 mile weekly commute when I experience what feels like a misfire 3 times. On my commute home all is well. I take the car to my dealer for a check, and it turns out my transmission is at fault. They're going to install a reman tranny.
I remembered that day when I bought her and did what I've never done before and that is to buy a warranty. Turns out it's the best money I've ever spent.
I think it's criminal how prone to failure the transmissions are. This car has spent a charmed life. Here's a picture of her this summer.

So....... How many of the over 270K LS have had a transmission failure?

Oh, I don't know, but judging by the amount of transmission threads you see on this board, and just a simple google search, I would say quite a few. Then again, every car I've researched to buy in the last 10 years has transmission issues. Seems to be the weakest component in modern cars.
I'm just saying that if my cars transmission died, with it's history, no ones is safe.

So if your house burns down I should also fear my house suffering the same fate? I read about house fires all the time. What is it's history? Was the trans ever serviced? What was the ACTUAL diagnosis of the transmission?

The things you read about on the internet are a very small sampling of actual owners.

2000 V6 with almost 180K miles that has only needed a solenoid pack. 2006 with 106K+ miles with no issues.

Good thing you had that warranty! My 02 LS was at 140K with no trans issues when I traded. My 06 had solenoid pack replaced under warranty.... The 60 day dealer waranty! Lucky me.

I'm going to hold my coments untill after your dealership installs a "new tranny" Cause if it misfired a couple times I don't know how they make the jump to a destryoed transmission. Time will tell...

I guess as long as you have the warranty you should be fine, but sounds like the dealership is working the system against the warranty company to me

Unfortunately, the 5R55 series of transmission fail very often compared to others. Just because you haven't had an issue doesn't mean others haven't.

Its well documented that they have a higher failure rate than other ford transmissions.

Like I said, the previous owner was in her 90's and the car was serviced faithfully by the dealer we both bought it from. I really don't think she was out drifting in it. When they dropped the pan, they found metal shavings in the oil. I was there.
But yeah, you're right. The coils never fail, the window regulators never break, and the valve covers never leak. The internet is crazy.
Thanks for the empathy Krakabeast. I was just venting.
On the bright side, they gave me a new MKX to drive until my car is done. It's a nice ride, but I miss my LS.
