Hello everyone,

Hope everyones turkey holiday was a good one.

So I took my Ls in for the oil change, and they are telling me that she has a small leak comming from the oil pressure sending unit, and are quoting me to fix it 300 buckaroos. Is this a project I can take on myself? Where would this sending unit be located?

I searched before I posted, and didnt find anything. My apologies if I overlooked a post about this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm looking for the location..... For now, Alldata says it's about a $45 part and a half hour labor, totaling ~$100 at the dealer. where did you go, Iffy lube?

The oil pressure sender (it's really just a switch - pressure or no pressure) screws into the left side of the oil filter adapter. This is on the front of the engine below the damper pulley. It is very easy to get to. It should be about a $20 part.

There's also an oil temperature sensor on the front of the oil filter adapter. Don't confuse the two.

Edit: My mistake, it's on the front of the oil filter adapter on gen I. It's 9278 on the diagram below. FordPartGiant has it for $17.02

Joe, is this it?

On gen II that's where it is. The on-line diagram for gen I is showing it on the front of the adapter facing forward. I don't know which is correct, but either way it is easy to get to and to change out.

A real leak from the sender should be leaving puddles of oil everywhere. A little seepage on the sender can be ignored. I'd get some engine cleaner and clean that area off really good. Then he can see if he really has a problem and if it's really the pressure sender.

If this diagnosis came from an Iffy Lube, it's probably just their most recent fraud of the month scheme to get more money.

@LS4me, I took her to our landmark lincoln here in denver colorado. Thanks Joegr, so how is it leaking? Is the switch just out or not working?

Where can i look at the online diagram joegr?

Thanks guys

That pic was from Alldata, 2001 V8.

If the switch weren't working, you'd get either a steady red oil light or a flashing one at startup. For them to say it was leaking, one would assume the leak is through the pressure switch, not just leaking where it is screwed in.

Here's the online link.

I think that I was looking at it wrong and it is actually showing the sensor coming out of the side and not the front.

Another place to look is here.

Thanks again guys for the info,

@joegr do you think i will have to actually replace that whole housing? I think that is what they were trying to do.

If the oil pressure sensor is leaking, then no, just the sensor.

If the housing is cracked and leaking, then yes the housing.

If the leak is between the housing and the engine (not unheard of), then you just need to replace the gasket.

I am very confused. There's a big difference between a leaking oil pressure sensor and needing to replace the oil filter adapter.

ok, just making sure, I knew they were probably gonna charge me to replace the WHOLE housing rather than just the sensor...smh. Then when I asked more questions, he topped it off by saying the item in question is ''hard to get to'', which to me, after seing the diagram, is total bs.

The whole thing is easy to get to from underneath. Just drive up on ramps and remove the front splash shield. It's probably easiest to just do an oil change at the same time. At the very least, I would replace the filter (I don't like trying to get them to seal twice) and the quart or so of oil that will drain out with it.

I'd still start by cleaning everything off really good so that you can verify that there really is a leak and where it is.
