Got an 'E' in the cluster and Check transmission message Saturday. Took it to the dealership and after investigating they told me the torque converter isn't locking and there's brass shavings everywhere/indication of failure somewhere. They're pulling it apart now to find out what went wrong.

Only 54k miles. :( Bummer.

If this is warranty, then let them rebuild or replace as they choose. (It's not like you have a choice.)
If you're paying, I'd replace, not rebuild.

Thanks for the advice. I'm expecting it to be covered under the warranty. They have to get into it before they can tell me that though, to see what exactly is wrong. But the premiumcare warranty from Ford has covered just about everything else, so here's hoping. In the meantime I'm telling everyone I traded in my LS for a Ford Focus.

If the torque converter needs replacing, and for some odd reason it ain't covered under warranty, tci 3400 stall :D

I'd definitely replace the Torque Converter and Solenoid Pack, but I wouldn't have any qualms about properly rebuilding the rest of it. Yes, I qualified that statement with "properly". That usually means I do it or one of the few guys I know and trust does it.

I'd probably prefer a reman/rebuild since I could opt to get the servos sleeved and a few other aftermarket mods done. Only problem is like I said, finding someone you could trust to do the work. Automatrics are still one of the most mysterious things to most mechanics. Funny part is the computer controlled ones are 10x easier to work with versus the older ones. You want to go say "WTF" just pop open a valve body from a C4 or TH350 and try to figure out how 2nd gear works. :)

So whatever the issue is it's bad enough that the claims guy from Ford said to replace the transmission with a brand new one. But now they tell me the transmission is on backorder and they have no idea for how long. But it is covered under the PremiumCare warranty, so awesome.

Got my car back today. Apparently a washer disintegrated and then ran itself through a bunch of times over who knows how long. Attached is the explanation I got from the dealer. They gave me a brand new transmission that they said cost $4,000. I paid $107 with tax.

Damn!! This is the first automatic trans car I've owned in awhile for reasons such as this.. Mine is NOT under any warranty, which is why I happen to baby the hell out of her. Glad yours was covered! Ouch!

Those trannys are not cheap. I have the receipt from the previous owner of my LS. They had a crate motor and tranny installed.....around 10K. That was done in 08.
