Did overheating loosen your radiator cap?
I overheated today and when I opened the cap to replace fluid, it was VERY loose.

Could I be so lucky as to just have had a loose cap?

Fan comes on just fine and have never seen any evidence of a leak.

The system is pressurized, so a loose cap could definitely be the root cause. Has there been any issue since you've tightened it?

Yeah.
It's gone full meltdown the last two days.

It holds temp perfectly for 20 miles and then goes up in steam.

It's been around 110° outside each time.

I'm picking up a degas bottle next.

Last night we heard a sound from the coolant cap.
This morning we bought a new cap.
The check engine light went out, so it must not have gone critical yesterday.

I'll find out tomorrow if the cap fixed it.

This happend to me before really freaked me out and shortly after that the overheating started....long story short change the degas bottle and make sure you bleed the system correctly ;)

Day 5 with a new $5 cap and still no issues.
I have been driving like a jerk and using AC to stress test.
The temp climbs to just under halfway on the gauge and doesn't budge no matter how I drive.

It looks like I got off cheap!!..... for now...
