alternator gone? or what else?

hey guys im new here and please excuse my lenguage , english its not my native lenguage. I drive a 2000 LS that not too long ago i was driving at night and out of the sudden my dash lights when down to the point where the car went off on me .I manage to pull to the side of the road and after that i had no power at all i had to tow the car home . the next day i went to check fuses i even try jump start but there was no fuel going to the front . the fuel pump switch did not went off . what i did after that is i test it the pump with a wire from the battery and the pump went on just fine i pluged the wire back up and try to start the car and it only went on till the fuel in the lines was consume . at that point i was thinking it was the wires to the pump but later on i did try again with no jump start and the car start it with no problems at all .last night the same thing happened again but this time it looks like the alternator is not charging . went ever i get a jump the car only run for a bit and also if after a i get to turn on when taking the + cable off the cars turn off.. is there a fuse in the alternator ??? what else can this be ???? its a pain to pull the alternator out to get it test it any help will be
greatly appreciated ..
 
have alternator tested


battery being drained dead, probably needs to be replaced as well
 
When the car starts do you have a red battery symbol on your dash that is lighted. If so then it sounds like the trouble is your alternator. If you do not have the red battery light then the trouble is somewhere else. If you're in the U.S. take your battery to an auto store like Autozone or Oreilly's and have them test the battery. If the battery is good then the alternator is bad. No fuses in the alternator.
 
thanks for replys i went to auto zone today to have the batt check and it was fine .tomorrow i will try to pull out the alternator to check it (thats goin to be fun)...
 
Sorry, there is no fuse in the alternator. Your brushes are probably worn out. You may be able to find a replacement set, or someone locally to rebuild the alternator for you. If not, you need to get a new or rebuilt OEM Motorcraft alternator. Aftermarket alternators don't seem to work will with the gen I LS because of the way that the PCM controls the alternator.

You should have your battery tested too. If it is weak or bad, you need to replace it. If you don't, it could kill the replacement alternator.

After you take care of that, you may or may not have a failing fuel pump to replace as well.


Edit: Should have checked. You're in the US. You won't find replacement brushes or a local rebuilder.
 
there is one more thing i should mention that at first i was thinking it was killing the battery .4 months ago i had a ball joint out on me in the road and the car hit the pavement a bit hard after i had the car tow to my place and replaced the ball joint the car did not ever start it with the key anymore .i had someone check my computer and reprogram everything but the car did not read the key anymore and i now have a small switch under the steeringweel to crank up the starter . could the wire that was used be causing a power drain or the like???

Maybe. It's hard to say not knowing exactly what they did.
 
well im outside i got all the 3 bolts out including the one on top but the alternator its rotating like the top bolt its there but i did get it out . now what ??? im i missing another bolt??? good thing my 9mm and other fire arms are not near the garage...:D...
 
Holy F, after reading the linked threads (and associated threads) I hope I never have to change my alternator.
 
Just to chime in for a moment---The alternator really does come out, although you may futz with it for seemingly hours before you get all the little bits and pieces aligned correctly to have it fall out on your face!

Good luck---I'm on my fourth alternator---I've gotten relatively good at pulling them, but the last one has been in the car for better than two years now, and is still going strong.

beer wont help i need something stronger .... and back and foward back and foward back and foward its feeling a bit loose now compare to when i start it.... back and foward back and foward yayy .....
 
well its not out yet but here is something for you guys to laugh about . i have good friend that cant even touch any tools at all not even hang a picture fram in the wall or figure how to plug the white red and yellow tv/dvd cables where they go ,sent me a text saying : hey dude i was just reading this forum that says there is a block somewhere that can be remove and gives you alot more room to work down there ??? did you see anything like that ??:eek::eek::eek: <<<<<i cant wait till i see him in person and explain what "the block is "

Try taping the alternator at the top with a BFH it will for sure come out good luck Mike.

I should go pick up a junkyard gen2 alternator and take it to the local rebuild shop. See what they would charge to beef it up for me and post it online here.
 
i see the tip of the sleeve sticking out a bit should the sleeve be all the way in so that the alternator can come out or is it a small sleeve that van be pull out ?its too dark now and this thing wont come out so tomorrow ill keep trying ....

Exactly I have a long bar that i used to put up against the alternator then hammered the bar. Just make sure the sleeves are tucked in otherwise you're wasting your time.
 
Eh yeah.... I did my Gen I alternator 5 times. Trust me, buy a Motorcraft...

Ok so i can see about 1/4 of the sleeve sticking out , should i try to push it in ? Before i keep trying ??????
 
Try prying the alt forwards and backwards. This will move the sleeves a little bit.

The problem is the typical "beefing up" horks up the computer control of the alternator, hence why the aftermarket ones are so disappointing.

I think a fix for this would be a second alternator run separately from the pcm.
