2000 lincoln Ls tranny will go in any gear but will not move unless put slap, put in slap it will turn the tires over just fine, put in reverse high rpm will slowly move back any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

prolly one of the bands is toast. when you put it in sst, it skips to 2nd right? it uses a different clutch pack then? and that's why it can then move.

Gen I skips to 2nd in auto as well. The sensor data from the transmission is bad enough that the PCM is unwilling to try shifting it without it being in manual mode. We can speculate about it (and it does seem bad) but with no real data to go on, our guesses may not be very good.

You need to get the codes scanned by a Ford specific scan tool, and then you will probably need a physical inspection and some more diagnostic tests. If you've been driving this way for a while, you can probably skip all that and go straight to transmission replacement.

A better bet would be to trade it for a car that you could better afford to keep running.

Nope. In D5 and D4 the trans starts in 1st gear. The 2nd gear start in SST was required to prevent the gas-guzzler tax from kicking-in.

Pretty darn sure it did that in D4 and D5 too, but I'm prepared to be proven wrong.
