Intake problem

Ok, so couple weeks ago I had a thermostat come apart in the outlet and blow through it. Big hole in water outlet. When they took it off, two of the bolts came out like normal. The third came out with an "anchor" on it for lack of a better term. Anyway the shop says they need to purchase an intake manifold. One guy says nope and finishes the job with a heli coil. Long story short, its leaking. Do I need an intake manifold and if so where do I get it. This is ridiculous.
 
It's a gen II V8, correct?

The heli-coil should have worked, unless the manifold was cracked around that insert or nearby. Do you know with certainty where the leak is? It might be something not directly related, or it might be that another insert has pulled out. I'll pull that much of it back apart to be sure before I went after a new manifold.
I don't know if you can still get new manifolds or not. If you can, it would be through a dealer probably. Otherwise, you have to hope that one from a junk yard won't have similar problems.
 
Not sure how yours is different from my first gen, but I replaced the cast-in thread insert that pulled out on my '02 housing with a stainless screw, lock washers, and nut. The now out-of business dealer that replaced the t-stat last time over torqued the shiz out of it. I have about 75,000 miles on it this way and no leaks. Check for cracks and that the o-ring is properly positioned on the t-stat (if applicable to gen 2).
 
You know, good question I will pull all the unecessary crap off it and watch for the leak and get back.
 
Yep, as suspected it was the heli coil. Leaking all around it, is there an after market intake for the 2004 V8?
 
salvage might be you best option.... not sure if a new one could be found
 
Take a picture and post it since I don't know what it looks like. If its a thru hole as it appears here (http://deneau.info/ls/s6x~us~en~file=s6x33007.htm~gen~ref.htm), drill it out the rest of the way and use a bolt/nut. If its blind and can't be drilled through (no room on the backside), Helicoil makes something called a twinsert. Its a helicoil inside a helicoil. You'll blind drill the larger tap drill, then tap the hole with a twinsert helicoil tap. Then install the twinserts. Nut and washer would be a lot more robust though if possible since the brittle plastic may not like to hold threads.

I think you're in the wrong area. If it was there, he would just replace the coolant outlet pipe (which is what he already did.)

I think he is talking about one of the four screws (two on each side) labeled as item 5 that bolt into the intake manifold.
 
Ok, there are only 3, which I thought was odd. If you are looking at the motor it is the one on your right and bottom of the outlet

Okay, look at the attached diagram. Which red number is the problem bolt?
Which other red number is the missing bolt?
