Coil Conversion video -How to-

Ugh...apparently even people who "supposedly" know about automotive suspension systems can't tell the difference between strut and SLA suspensions...

Otherwise, very nice, informative videos. I'm not looking forward to the day I have to convert to coil springs, but when it happens, I'll definitely use this video as a reference. :)

When they're referred to and listed as struts( For the Converted guys atleast) just about everywhere you go that'll be what people call them.

No need to prove anything, just saying.

Yeah. I know. Misinformation and incorrect nomenclature starts to be referred to as fact when it is proliferated as profusely as this misnomer has been over the past decade or so. Once it has been engrained into the lexicon as deeply as the mistaken notion that the MN12/FN10 platform(s) has McPherson struts has been, it's difficult if not impossible to actually make the unwashed masses believe the actual facts of the matter. Even when proof is readily available and easily demonstrated. It truely boggles the mind and saddens the heart that our society is so easily influenced by distortion of facts and complete ignorance. :(

But anyhoo, the vids are quite informative less that one misleading bit of misinformation:D

air shock2.JPGdammit!

Shocking...simply shocking...that Motorcraft makes shocks for the Mark VIII.

Well they keep strutting around like they own the place

It's your job to put said struts in their place. If you let the struts do what they want they'll walk all over you. If need be I can suggest a good strut obediance center if you want to go that route.

I wish someone would remind me of that eveytime someone calls it a strut :D
Just busting your balls man.

I walked in on them last night and they were in the process of going down on the garage floor...they tried to explain themselves but I knew they were full of hot air.

 :) Unfortunately, it's a common error, even among experienced mechanics. I assume the only reason people refer to the shocks as "struts" is because they have the coil (or air) spring integrated with the shock. That's the only reason I can fathom since strut and SLA suspensions are vastly different designs. However, in a non-strut-type suspension, it's called a coil-over shock (or air spring/shock assembly, as Ford calls it). The biggest reason I'm so passionate about it is probably because I'm not a fan of strut suspensions. Never have been. Struts are a cheap and simple suspension design that belongs on cheap econoboxes, not proper luxury/sports cars. For example, I love the Mark VII, but the Fox body struts up front always disappointed me. I love our Cobra but I don't care for the strut front end. But there's nothing I can do about it:(

arent you suppose to use spring isolators?

I did. It keeps the coil from riding directly on that upper metal perch in the video and on the aluminum lower control arm. Again, personal preference, but I don't care to have my coils riding metal-on-metal.
