My LS remote stopped working a few days ago and I think it may be the battery. Is it as straight forward as swapping out the battery or does it need to be reprogrammed/reset after changing the battery?

I tried swapping in an extra battery I had and the remote still does not work.

Or do these remote die eventually (it's a standard Ford/Lincoln 4-button remote).

Thanks!

Yes, you just replace the battery. No reprogramming required.
Do you have any other [working] remotes, or was that your only one?
I had one button on one remote fail. Certainly, it is possible for the remote to fail, or for the radio receiver in the driver's door module to fail.
What year is your LS?

Thanks - it's a 2004 LS8

I have a second remote that was not working when I bought the car in early 2008. I changed the battery and that didn't help so I just left it and used the second remote which I never had to change the battery in.

I will test the replacement battery tonight to make sure it is good. None of the buttons worked when I changed the battery.

Since you have a gen II, you can try the reprogram procedure and see if it helps (I don't really expect it to, but it's worth a try.)

Replacing the battery
The remote entry transmitter uses one coin type three-volt lithium
battery CR2032 or equivalent.
To replace the battery:
1. Twist a thin coin between the two
halves of the remote entry
transmitter near the key ring. DO
NOT TAKE THE RUBBER COVER
AND CIRCUIT BOARD OFF THE
FRONT HOUSING OF THE
REMOTE ENTRY TRANSMITTER.
2. Do not wipe off any grease on the
battery terminals on the back
surface of the circuit board.
3. Remove the old battery.
4. Insert the new battery. Refer to the diagram inside the remote entry
transmitter for the correct orientation of the battery. Press the battery
down to ensure that the battery is fully seated in the battery housing
cavity.
5. Snap the two halves back together.
Note: Replacement of the battery will not cause the remote transmitter
to become deprogrammed from your vehicle. The remote transmitter
should operate normally after battery replacement.

How to reprogram your remote entry transmitters
You must have all remote entry transmitters (maximum of four)
available before beginning this procedure.
To reprogram the remote entry
transmitters:
1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the 1 (LOCK) position to 4 (RUN).
4. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 1 (LOCK)
position and 4 (RUN). Note: The eighth turn must end in the 4 (RUN)
position.
5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
6. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
9. Turn the ignition to the 1(LOCK) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.

Check the contacts on the remote. Mine died and when I changed the bat. still N.G. . Pull up slightly on the two metal contacts and see if that helps. E-Bay sells new ones. Good luck.

And if you need a new one they are $11 on Amazon. I just got one for my car as it did not have one when we bought it. Use the procedure posted above to program it.

Is there a way to check/diagnose the radio receiver?

If the battery swap doesn't work, or the battery terminals are ok then I'll try a new remote off ebay/amazon before going the radio receiver route.

But be careful, because I don't know if theres a way to unprogram it. lol

I have a remote that will lock and unlock my Navigator and LS at the same time!

Go through the programming procedure on whichever car you want to remove a remote from. Any remotes that you don't reprogram in will be unprogrammed when you finish.

Hey, that's good to know. I tested the old remote I didn't program when I got the new one and it doesn't work anymore. Thanks!
