break light issue

whats up everyone its been awhile since I have been on but I have a stupid question, has anyone had any problems with their break light on their dash come on I have a 2000 Lincoln ls6 that is having this issue and I'm trying search and find out what could be the problem, if it has a sensor issue or what. if anyone has had this problem I would appreciate your input. from what I can tell you is that sometimes it is off and while driving It comes on.
 
you check the fluid level?
pads?
Rotors?
when were they last serviced?
when does the light come on?
when does it go off?
does it come on and off in the same trip?
does the emergency brake work?
does it go on during hard stops?
 
fluid level is good checked that. as far as when it comes on all I can tell ya is that it comes on and off its hard to say, it has gone on and off in the same trip. its my wifes car... when I did drive it I noticed it came on once when we hit a bump so I thought I was a sensor?? emergency brake does work sorry I know its hard to diagnose from this.

Only two things can turn the brake warning light on, the emergency brake being applied, and low brake fluid level. You could have a bad parking brake switch, or you could have a bad brake fluid level float switch. However, I am still going to suggest that you have marginally low brake fluid level. Your symptoms are typical of this. I've talked to others that said they checked and they were convinced their level was okay, only to find that it actually was low. Topping the fluid off turned the light off (still, the level was low because the pads were worn and needed to be replaced).

Go take another look. Take the cap off the reservoir, don't just look through the plastic (it gets stained and can fool you). The correct level is marked by a molded line near the top of the reservoir, it is not the line halfway down where the halves of the reservoir join.
 
thanks joegr I appreciate your help I have checked the brake fluid it is topped off like you say i will have the parking brake switch checked also ill check my brake pads and see whats up with them thats would make if they are worn.

Historically, the brake fluid sensor switch on the brake fluid bottle goes bad alot, on Ford company cars. Mine did on the wife's 2000 LS, my 2002 F-150, and 1998 Volvo 2.3L HPT. Never had this problem on my GM vehicles. My .02!

I've never had that failure on any of my 7 1986 and newer Ford products. The least miles I put on them was just over 50K; the average is about 125K. My daughter's is approaching 180K with nary an issue.
