Need a new wheel bearing ASAP

What's the deal with the Lincoln LS wheel bearings? I replaced a front wheel bearing hub just two months ago and all was well and quiet again. Then last week I started hearing some noise which sounded odd. I jacked up the car today to do a visual inspection and the back wheel is extremely loose. So glad I didn't drive to work today... it could have locked up or maybe fallen off!

What surprises me so much about this is the lack of warning. It only made a faint growl noise for a few days before getting violent!

Where can I find parts to fix this? I'm a little worried about finding a good shop to press in replacement bearing in the hub. Is this a good solution or should I source out the entire hub assembly? I would imagine that any little metal shaving or burr left in the hub during removal/installation would shorten the life of the replacement bearing.

That's pretty sick! You may have more broken than just the bearing, but let's hope that is all it is. In extreme cases, the hub itself can become damaged by a bad bearing's inner race.

I had my rear bearings pressed out and the new one pressed in at the dealer. They did a great job, no probs yet!

Bought them at Rockauto.com and had them in 3 days

I had it done at napa. Did both rears at the same time and I think it was about $175. I took the spindles there and they had the parts and pressed them at the same time.

I took the spindle assembly off and brought it to the dealer and they charged me $90 for both rears

I tackled the wheel bearings today and I'm pretty much down to just finding the actual bearings themselves. It appears that there's two wheel bearings per side in the rear (4 total). But I have not heard this when using the forum search.

Update: There's only one bearing per side. Here are a few photos for people in the future who want to tackle this job. You need to rent a 36mm socket from autozone and a "universal hub puller" to help break loose the cv axle from the hub.

Then I'd recommend drilling out the three rivits on the shield and then finding a machine shop with a press to put in the new bearings.

The last picture is "fun" project of mine sitting on the work bench that I've been working on before grad school starts up. 60-75mph electric RC boat

I HIGHLY recommend that you have a machine shop do this part for you.

You got a new axle nut, right? It's a good idea to replace all of the locking nuts as well.
