Hey all, Im new to the site and I just got a 2000 LS V8 and I believe im having an alternator issue. The warning comes on saying to check the charging system, so I started at the battery. The battery was low so I made sure it was charged. I traced the power wire to the alt and with a DMM and I made sure it was getting proper voltage at the alternator. Everything seemed well, was getting 12.6 V at the alt. I want to see if the alternator is working properly so I figured I would take it out of the vehicle to get it tested. I took off the belt, moved the AC line, and un bolted the two lower bolts. I then also took of the retaining nut that holds the power line to the Alt. Then Unplugged the harness that I assume connected to an internal Voltage Regulator. I read on here that the metal sleeves that hold the lower bolts in may restrict the drop of the alternator so I made sure they were depressed ( I can see a gap between the two lower bolts and their respective mounting locations).

So after doing all of that... The thing will not budge. At all. Even with a large flat head, when I pry it kinda goes back and forth, but almost like there is some type of fulcrum point that it rotates on. After using the "search" button I have not come to find if there is another bolt that I am missing. Please help. I appreciate any and all input. This will become my DD and I want it to work properly. My Mustang already has enough issues... :)

There is a long bolt that goes thru the top mount and two bolts, one on front and one on the rear of the bottom mount. Thats it.

If you are getting the 'check charging system' warning then it is probly your alternator. Is your hydraulic cooling fan pump leaking fluid on the alt? This is what caused mine to eventually fail.

Thanks! I'll look into it.

I did not know about this top bolt. Probably my issue lol. And there doesn't seem to be any leakage. But I'll double check. Is the top bolt just a 13 or 15 mm? Or is it that one that's on the top that looks like a stud?

Its a 15 mm bolt about 4 or 5 inches long with a nut on the back above where the PCM plugs into the alternator.

Thanks so much! I used a 15mm box end open end with a cheater bar to get it off. Now its wiggling this thing loose.... Holy crap its a PITA. I really appreciate all the help!

No problem. good luck with it. I think you will find your problem is the alternator going bad. It may be intermittent but usually the 'check charging system' is the alternator.

Update: Thanks to you guys I got her out ( just had to use a bigger hammer, well pry bar, :P ) Now onto the install! Any tips for that? Thanks again all!!!!!
