Will a 2003 transmission fit into a 2002

Friend is parting out his LS and I know parts are hard to come by, I know from my reading here is there are Gen 1 and Gen 2. Are the mechanical parts compatibale. If so want to grab everything I can

It might work. '03 LS's built before 7/2002 have the 5r55n and after 7/2002 they all have the 5r55s.

ALL '03s have the 5R55S. That was one of the 500 improvements. LSes built before 7/02 were 2002 MY, those after are 2003s.
