Where is your temp guage at normally?

Ive been dealing with cooling issues since november. I had a cracked part in the upper coolant hose and i had to wait for the "re-engineered" hose to come out. Got that only to find my hydraulic fan pump was out too. Thanks to ODDBALL on this forum i got one for a cool $70. Got that pain in the butt installed saturday and that got my fan running. I haven't over heated yet but it seems to be running hot. My temp gauge stays at the 1/2 mark but if i remember right the gauge used to stay right under half. Where are your guys' gauges at? Before it gets to that point the car runs great, when it gets to the 1/2 mark it starts to run sluggish. I have heat so i dont think its a air bubble. Thermostat maybe?

2001 V6 120,000 miles

Both of mine run at exactly the half way mark, which is where it is supposed to be.

Mine looks like it's one needle's width past dead center. Takes about 3 miles give or take to get there, once it's there it stays there until the car cools down. Been like that since I got the car last year, even in the hot Oklahoma summer.

Answers my question. Its been so long i dont remember how its supposed to run. Thanks for all the fast reply's.

It's a somewhat useless gauge anyhow, it's either in the middle for OK and pinned for NOT OK.

ON/OFF, there is no in between from what I understood.

for the first few miles, you'll see it rise to the middle for "up to temp", then
the option remaining is pinned to the corner for OVERHEATING.

FAILSAFE mode follows shortly after that.

Eh, not quite.
Dead middle actually represents "normal". I've seen this range from 225(ish) to 237. It starts to rise again at 239. I cooled it down at that point, so I don't know if the needle keeps rising at 230, or there's a linear action, or something in between.

when it's overheating it will quickly pin the needle.

Yes. It's more than a two state (on/off), but it's not a linear temperature gauge either.

When the engine temperature is below the normal operating range, it will show between bottom and half way, according to temperature.

When the engine temperature is in the normal operating range, it will show exactly half way. It can vary a lot, but the gauge will not move from the half way point.

When the engine temperature is above the normal operating range, The gauge will be between the half way point and the top, according to temperature. The range from above normal to way too hot seems to be pretty small, so it quickly reaches the top.

The first clue that the engine is getting too hot, isn't the gauge. Instead, it's the engine cooling fan working at maximum.

"Where is your temp guage at normally?"

It's in the instrument cluster, right behind the steering wheel.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
