Can someone help...I have a 2000 LS and about a month ago I noticed a roaring sound coming from my drivers side front wheel. It is most noticable when I turn the wheel to the left. In it only happens at speeds above 30mph. Is this the wheel bearing or some other probem (ball joint)?

I would expect that with a roaring sound that it would be a wheel bearing. That is pretty typical. The ball joint would usually be more of a clucking sound when going over bumps.

That said, although I wrench regularly, I'm not an FLM mechanic! LOL

Replacement

has anyone replaced the hub assembly? If so, are there tips or tricks in getting the job done easily?

I had the same problem and it was my wheel bearing. If you jack your car up and shake the wheel and it wobbles you need new wheel bearings. Thats what happen with mine and I got new wheel bearings problem solved.

Although they can be bad enough to make the roaring sound but not have enough play to notice while shaking the wheel. However, if you can notice they are DEFINITELY bad!

Never replaced one on an LS (yet). I am however about to do the rear hub assembly. That will be a whole different deal though...

Looks like the bearing is part of the hub,

not wanting to hi-jack this post but I have a similiar problem. My ls makes excessive road noise, I crank the wheel from side to side on the corners and it doesn't seem to be the wheel bearings it seems tight. The car has been just lined up, other than the tires (Avon) I have come to no conclusion, any help would be appreciated.

thanks

On a wheel bearing, you can usually check by going to an empty parking lot and turning the car left and right (fairly sharp) at a speed you can hear the bearing. If you turn left and the noise goes away or diminishes, it's the driver's side wheel bearing. If it goes away or diminishes when turning right, it's the passenger side bearing. What you're doing is taking the load off the bearing by turning the car and transferring the load and weight to the opposite side bearing.

And don't underestimate tires being a possible culprit (if the parking lot test doesnt show a difference in noise). Noisy tires can sound JUST like a bad wheel bearing. I have a set right now that need to GO soon.
