It keeps the belt tight.

How hard is it to replace?

Wow, is that different than the motor that is in my car, and any motor I have taken out of a Mark VIII....everything is on the opposite side.

That does not keep the belt tight actually, what keeps it tight is the tensioner not that pulley. If I remember correctly that is the idler pulley. It is basically an extra (sorta) pulley that keeps the belt in place. I might have one sitting around from one of my motors that I have ripped apart. Let me see if I have one laying around and I will let you know. If not its all good.

To replace it just get the one from me, buy a new one, then remove the bolt that holds it in place. Put the new idler pulley in place and then tighten the bolt down.

I went to Rock Auto and a brandy new one is like less than $10, and as high as $20. If I have one lying around it will be useable and you can have it.

That's because it's a FWD 4.6L. That is indeed the serpentine idler pulley. It's a $10 part at the dealer. Bolt takes it off, bolt it back on...

i was going crazy right with you there.:shifty:

Remember that picture- it may come in use if you're shopping for a replacement 4.6L A friend of mine got screwed and unknowingly bought a FWD engine thinking it would fit his Mark VIII and was out $750 after the seller pretty much told him "tough sh!t- buyer responsible for checking fitment"

Remember that:

1.) The timing cover is different; the "criss-cross" pattern on the left side of the timing cover is exclusive to the Continental.

2.) The pulley system is on the right on the FWD; left on the RWD.

3.) The FWD 4.6L is exclusive to the 1995-2002 Lincoln Continental- the mounts and bellhousing are completely different. FWD 4.6L will not fit any RWD Modular vehicle!

4.) The water pump pulley design is different than the Mark VIII. It turns retrograde compared to the Mark VIII.

Just a beer for your thoughts...
