I have an 02 LS V8 100k, I know its the vavle cover gasket that needs to be replaced, but the car runs and drives and idles fine, NO CHECK ENGINE light or anything, I only ended up changing one plug since the further I kept going, more of the coils had oil in them. I decided to just leave it the way it is then, with the plugs in them, NOT replacing the plugs, since then oil would get in the holes, this way if I just let it be, it will continue to run and drive fine or should I just replace the plugs... thoughts??? However, after replacing the first plug and when I started the car, there was a slight poof of white smoke form the engine bay, but it instantly went away. Was that prob just spark contact with the oil....?

Regardless of comments to the contrary, oil by itself on a plug won't make a coil fail. The coils are known to have a limited life, and oil in a plug well will make it easier to create a carbon track that'll contribute to misfire. New rubber boots are readily available at parts stores. A blast of solvent down the well, followed by compressed air to evaporate the solvent, followed by a quick snug-up on the cover bolts, and a thorough cleaning of the coil 'hard' parts and new boots and plugs, and you'll have a good, (but probably temporary) fix. If you have one bad coil, you'll soon have more---the only long-term answer is to replace coils, cover gaskets and the plugs while you're at it.

When I did my plugs, just because of mileage never a misfire, I found that my passenger side had oil in several plug wells. 2 quite full. Drivers side was all dry. Like mentioned by cammerfe blow the oil out to change the plug. I have yet to have a misfire or to change the VCG. I imagine the day will come but not yet.

ok, yea thats what I did before I changed that plug, so the most of this oil is in the passanger side and not the drivers side usually? I didnt check the drivers, just the passanger. Does anyting happen if some oil does get into the holes, NOT the wells, but inside the actual hole??

I dont see how oil could get down past the spark plug gasket down through to the spark plug hole. But if it did..Im guessing the oil would simply burn off in the combustion process.

im thinking hes asking about when he changed his plugs.... But I would agree. infact that "puff" of white smoke may have very well been just that.
