Since the stock air box has the snorkel tube supplying air to the stock filter I thought why not leave the bottom there and keep the top open! I cut the air box lid to fit and then used the gasket from the stock air filter to keep it secure once its snapped in. I think it looks cool and is different.I am going to make a better looking bracket to keep the filter in place, the one there was a quick fix. The one thing I will say that I noticed is the sound it makes at WOT is very throaty with the way I have it now. Its as if the box is amplifying the sound. Anyway opinions on the the looks and function?

it looks awesome, but i'd imagine the least resistance in coming from the engine bay...

BUT, you say it sounds "louder" than without the box?

Yeah it really sounds like it is pulling some air in from somewhere! The box amplifies the sounds i think.

cool stuff, why leave any of the top on? just curious is all

Thanks and I did it that way for three reasons...

1st. I haven't seen it done yet.
2nd. I think it looks good.
3rd. I would think having this set up I'm less likely to suck water into it when hitting a huge puddle at night (yes this has happened lol).

maybe you can through together a comparison video clip for us... i like the idea of a louder intake!!!

I left the bottom and top of my stock air box alone and removed that snorkel/pos from the front of it. Even doing just that made a difference in sound.

Looks good. Although I'm kinda partial to my heatshield setup. It is different and creative. Good work

i got 27.2 mpg this weekend. I drove from Topeka ks to Lincoln Nebraska and back. I had 80 miles to empty when i pulled into my driveway in Topeka. Last time i went to Lincoln I had to fill up in auburn NE. I think this new set up helped my MPG's!!!!!

I wish it was FLAT where I live.

Yeah, air intake turbulence will effect the engine note. Most of the stock airboxes are designed with air silencers that try to make the intake air flow as smooth as possible. This really has no effect on the performance of the engine.

An old trick from the fox-body mustang days was to pop out the air silencer to make the car sound meaner. And that's all it did was make the engine make more noise. But then again that's all some people wanted :)

Your increase in MPG might be due to a more efficient air filter. That's assuming that the gas is the same, the right foot was the same, the tune-up on the car was the same, etc.
