I have read threads with similar issues, but there were so many different answers that I want to ask myself.

Here's the problem:

2001 LS V8
Will not shift into gear. D5, D4, Reverse... wont move. Like if it was in neutral.
However, if i put it in SST mode, i can drive fine. Goes into all gears 2-5.
I really hope this means my transmission is not screwed. :( (Too bad there's no reverse in SST mode, otherwise I'd be ok)

Planning on taking to dealer on Monday to have it checked out.
What can you guys tell me about this problem? I went to a local transmission shop today and the guy couldn't figure it out. He wanted to pull the tranny out, but i wasn't about to allow that without trying the dealer first. (plus i dont have $1500-3000 right now).
He did check the fluid and said it was good.

Help...

sorry but it dont sound to good. I would say it needs a rebuild hope im wrong. I work at a tranny shop and have never seen one that doen't go into gear that doesn't need an overhaul. But these cars have alot of electonic stuff so until you get it scanned you will not know. what you could do is get under there and make sure all wires are connected. I drive an ls but im not familar with the set up. i was thinking maybe the linkage came lose but im not sure if it's got a manual rod or not. also most of the cars that come in there all have check engine lights on. do you have any code lights? good luck

No, no check engine light. Infact, the guy I took it to hooked it up to a scanner and only came up with a Cruise control code (clockspring...whole other thread).

if i were you i would get up under there and feel around. wat your looking for is gona be on the drivers side of the tranny kinda right in the middle it looks like a cable about six or so inches long that gets stuck on to a lever with a nob sticken outa it thats called the linkage. your gona have to probably jack it up but BE CAREFULL when your messing around with the tran you could knock it out of gear CHOCK YOUR WHEELS

its gona look something like this trany link.jpg

trany link.jpg

OK, i will look for this in the morning. But if I find it, can I get it unstuck? Or does that part need to be replaced?

no if you find it you got to stick the end of the cable on to that nipple in the picture until it snaps . the cable comes from your shifter in the car

another thing is there is a park nutural safety switch that wont let the car start when its in gear . you could put the car in drive and try to start it if it starts id say its linkage but im not sure if the switch is in the shifter controls in your car or on the trany

transmission

mine does the same thing but sometimes reverse will work but most of the time it doesnt..

Well it aint good that's for sure. It must be something mechanical if there's no codes. I kinda doubt it's the linkage.
