It's time to get the fluid changed in my 93. it is rather dark and i have no idea if or when if it has ever been changed. 136K mi on car.
Transmission works perfect and as it should. no slippage, nice shifts. no leaks either.

what do you guys recommend i do? Would having it flushed suffice, or crack the pan and do a fluid and filter change. Should pan AND torque converter be drained if its never been done before? or just drain pan and replace filter?
Also, Do you recommend i put Mercon V in it?, or is that not a good idea for a 1st Gen? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Joe

Definitely drain the torque converter when you change the fluid and switch to Mercon V. It handles heat better than 3. Just make sure you get all of the old fluid out of the trans cooler lines before you fill it with mercon v. Also, if you don't have one already grab a deep sump trans pan from a later mark 8 and the corresponding years filter. I believe 96+ had deep sump pans.:)

Another reason to drop the pan and change out all the fluid is to also change the filter.

while your in there...1-2 accumulator upgrade, the snap ring is a PITA, but if it was never done, it should be.

+1 Joe on the Mercon V fluid...

Also the 1 2 accumulator is a good idea... Only about $30 for the part. I'm sure you can get one from Max at 5 star ford for the a good price. His number is on the Right of the screen.

I used royal purple and put in a bauman shift kit when i did mine. Never messed with the 1-2 accumalator in any of my marks and never had any problems. even on the supercharged and nitrous mark i had. I know some people where i am from that run amsoil in there trannys also
