My 01 LS V8 has been having a couple of issues. It has had problems shifting in and out of 4th gear the "Check Transmission/E" problem. Reading through what others have done seems to point to the solenoid pack and valve body as the source of the problem. My check engine light is on, so I picked up a scanner (Innova 3100e) and got the following codes:

P0745 Pressure Control Solenoid A
P0795 Pressure Control Solenoid C

Extended memory test
P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit (Bank 1)
P0734 Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio
P0735 Gear 5 Incorrect Ratio

I took my car into a local transmission shop for a second opinion. They pulled the same codes and suggested dropping the pan for a better idea. I was told that "excessive shavings" were found in the pan and floating in the fluid. I was then told that removing the tranny is the next step to see where the shavings are coming from. That would be to the tune of $580 minus the $91 they charge me to drop the pan. I drove the car to and from the shop and no 4th gear was the only noticeable problem. The question is, (for everyone that has had this problem) was there any metal in your pan when it was removed?

Sounds like a solenoid to me. Possibly a spring also. When I dropped my pan, there were no shavings in the pan. Some metal residue on the magnet is normal. I would drop the pan yourself and see if there are shavings in the pan. I have a hard time believing that the transmission is able to perform well minus fourth gear if it has excessive shavings in it. I had a 95 mustang with excessive shavings. The gears were grinding. If you have any mechanical knowledge, changing out the solenoid is fairly easy. It takes about an hour.

I am ok with dropping the pan swapping the solenoid out. The refilling of the fluid is the problem for me. I agree with you, that doesn't make sense how disability is ok, minus the 4th gear.
