Many of you may have seen my post when I purchaced a 01 3:73 cobra center chunk on ebay about a month ago. it was supposed to have 30k miles on it. Well it wasnt a 3:73 and it took about two weeks to get a hold of the guy to get things straighten out. He was a stand up guy and felt I got shipped the wrong unit. He refunded the purchase price and told me to keep the unit.
I purchaced the 3:73 I wanted with a bearing kit, I figured I'd rebuild the trac loc while I was in there.
I bought the upgraded carbon clutch kit with a new spring. looking at the clutch pack that came out I can tell you it had a lot more than 30k on it and the wear on the spring was pretty telling. If you've never done this it is almost impossible to get the spring back in with the ring gear in the way. Not to mention a new spring to a used one will be anywhere from 1/8 to a 1/4 inch wider because its never seen heat or wear.
Here are the pictures from the rebuild along with the proper stacking order of the carbon clutches. some have said you can us one of your old clutch plates and go every other one but I dont know that I stick one of the old plates in the mix. once I put the new spring in it was a hell of a lot tighter than the old one.
you should soak the clutch pack in friction modifier for at least 15 min before you install them.
