Chi paint tableware is made of natural rhus lacquer. Any of various shrubs or small trees of the genus Rhus, having compound leaves, clusters of small greenish flowers, and usually red, hairy fruit. Some species, such as the poison ivy and poison oak, cause an acute itching rash on contact.

The Chinese tree Rhus verniciflua (syn. Toxicodendron vernicifluum), or lacquer sumach, produces a white, poisonous secretion that can be used to coat objects in different colors. Chinese art uses almost exclusively red and black as colorings, very rarely gold. After varnishing, a second layer of lacquer can be applied, and layers up to thirty are no rarity. The lacquer will dry exclusively in a dark and moist atmosphere, making the production of lacquer ware a secret for a long time. Lacquer ware has in most cases a gleaming polished surface or is inlaid with different materials like gold, silver, jade, ivory or mother-of-pearl. The oldest examples of lacquered goods come from tombs of pre-Shang cultures.

Rhus lacquer is very resistant against alkalis and acids and thus was a widespread art material. The characteristic element that gives the lacquer its distinctive features is called "urushiol" (from the Japanese word for lacquer, urushi). It made possible native designs in Burma and Japan, both famous for their lacquer ware. The Chinese character for lacquer (qi) is a picture of liquid dropping from a tree. The modern form adds water as the determinant

The sap can be used as a varnish or a lacquer. It is obtained by incision of the stem, which is best done in mid-summer. The lacquer is frequently used in tableware, it requires a damp atmosphere in which to dry and harden, a moist cave being ideal. It is resistant to acids, alkalis, alcohol and temperatures up to 70°c.
