Okay got 61,000miles on car when should i check the timing on the timing belt on these cars. Car runs awesome and everything, just want nothing to break. Also what else should i check, i always check my fluids weekly and always change my oil every 3k intervals:)

Ummmm...hate to tell you this but your LS does not have timing belts but does have timing chains which apparantly should be changed at some point later in its life ....just can't remember what the recomended mileage is

Okay i rather have a timing chain i had horrible experiences with those piece of :q:q:q:q rubber one in my eclipse. Rubber ones always break. So when exactly should i get it checked guys?

NOt sure if a visual "check" of a metal chain will really tell you much? I've viewed timing chains as being something that you don't change? I could be very wrong.

I do know that modern oils last well beyond 3k miles (on street cars at least) though. I've submitted oil for oil analysis with the oil sample I've submitted having 9-14k miles. And both times, the reports came back showing that the engine was running fine, and in short, the oil still had all of it's protective properties left.

I know i just baby all my car and do it every 3-4k intervals:) Does anyone know more about the tming chains on how to check them. Or what should i check?

You don't need to check em. Believe me, if there is something wrong with em you will hear it. I had a timing chain tensioner go bad on my V6 Mystique and god damn there was some loud knocking comming from the engine, because the chain was hitting the wall or so. So I had the chain replaced with the tensioners while the engine was open. It ran very expensive for that car as the almost has to take off the whole engine to get access to the chain (did I say that I freakin hate front wheel drive cars especially the ones with big engines).

With LS it will be easier, but I don't think that can actully check anything for the chain before something goes wrong or without opening up the engine.

They say that at 60k you should have a service to have some things checked. I would look into that at the local dealer and see what they inspect. It is simply, the 60k mile service. Some people say that you dont exactly need this but I did it and well I stil had stuff break.

The only way to actually check the timing chains, gears, and tensioners, is to take them out for inspection. Doing this requires the entire front of the motor to be taken off. In other words, if you are going to the trouble to 'inspect' them, then you are just going to end up buying new parts and putting them on since it is so much trouble to just inspect them.

Simply pulling off the valve covers only gives you a small view the parts that need to be inspected as well as the fact that in order to properly inspect them you have to compare them to the new parts you would be putting on. You can however look to see any unusual wear and metal scrapings that are just obvious... but it will be more obvious when those parts fail in a couple thousand miles anyway.
