3 things...

1) WELCOME

2)SEARCH! All your questions regarding common issues and probably everything else you could possibly need to know about the LS has already been talked about and should pop up with a quick google search.

3) Don't buy that car.

Laughed out loud when I saw this haha.

To the OP, an 03 with 165k, unless its dirt cheap I'd say no don't buy it. 03's were still shakey, and you don't know of it having problems but 165k I'm sure it's had stuff replaced, and if you don't know exactly what was replaced already its hard to say what you'll probably have to replace in the future. If you buy this car, have enough money to buy the car twice, use half on the car and save the other half for repairs. And if you do buy don't come crying back here when you have an issue come up, search search search man.

Basically what it comes down to is you should but a civic. And not this car. Lots of people see how cheap the LS is, and think wow I can get alot for the money, well they are cheap for a reason,, and if your not mechanically inclined then be prepaired to spend a pretty penny to keep it running top notch.

Have a pleasant day.

if it hasn't had any of the many many many problem these cars are well known for having, everything on the car is pretty much ready to fail and be replaced

And it has nothing to do with maintanence costs. It has everything to do with Ford abandoning the LS.

As is any complex machine.

Which ones? I'd say that my BMW is slightly worse.

Acura TL, Inifniti G series, even the new maximas are better equipped. Love my car but the LS is falling behind fast nowadays.

As would be ANY 13+ year old car. Every time I think I would like to have my '65 (actually, '64 1/2) Mustang back I remember how well my LS rides at higher speeds; how well it handles; how comfortable it is. I am then snapped back into reality and realize what a I would be giving up just to relive memories. By today's standards that Mustang was a piece of crap! Points, cap & rotor, plugs & wires about every 12K miles, sloppy steering, no A/C, P/S or P/B, vinyl seats, regular carburetor rebuild...... The list goes on and on.

We've had this discussion before......

Lots of 13 year old cars don't have the stupid issues the LS does. Mine is not 13 years old either. And still under 100K miles, one previous owner. I don't drive it hard either. Other fords go well past 100K with none of the issues we have.

I love the car don't get me wrong. And even if i did trade it in (dont see that happening anytime soon) i would not sit here and bash it. But it really irritates me how stupid the issues are. A cooling system should be designed to outlast the car, and never leak or get air in it. The transmission is another bad design. Other ford transmissions have no issues. One of those could have been used instead.

Everything else i can live with. I don't think any of us want to drive around with a loud, sluggish shifting vehicle.

I can't address the trans as I have had no problems with complete drain and refills done about every 50K miles (one '06 has ~62K and the other ~108K miles). I'm pretty sure the 5R55N/S was the only trans that meet the weight and size requirements. A 5-speed auto was not very common in 1998!

You can thank the EPA for the plastic cooling parts (BTW, I believe almost every manufacturer has had to resort to plastic). It isn't the design so much as it is the suppler. Same with the window regulator. BMW had been using that design for years before Lincoln adopted it. The problem was with a stupid plastic part that should have been metal in the first place. Plastics are used in high stress applications all the time. How do you feel about getting in an airplane that isn't made from aluminum?

Lincoln had to save as much weight as possible (we've discussed this before, too), even going to the length of eliminating the subs from the (IIRC) '02 Alpine system. How much weight did that save? All of 10 pounds? Same with the 2nd gear start in SST in Gen1 models. The sole purpose was to keep us from having to pay the gas-guzzler tax.
