pointless thread but just a thought.

So on my 5 hour journey back home for the holiday weekend I decided to rename my car "The Think Tank".

While I was in there I came up with this idea.

I don't know how many of you smoke in your cars, I sure as hell don't smoke nor let anyone in the car do so. So to the ashtray is wasted space, and in that case so are the power ports and cigarette lighter. (If I need one I'll use the one in the center counsel) Just thought when I go to do my double din, money permitting, I know where I'm running the ipod cable. I set my EVO in there and it sit nicely except with the Otterbox it is way too big but I think an ipod will fit nicely and conceal it better than throwing it in the glovebox or the center counsel. Push the ashtray and BAM! out slides an ipod.

Also, I'm not to sure but on our '72 Mercury (Creme Puff Yellow, black top, black vinyl interior, 8-track player, and 460 cubes of stock raped ape power beneath the hood to get a picture in your head) my dad wired a switch to it that was hidden that killed the power. I don't know if cut out the battery, the starter, the fuel pump, or what but it was a pretty much a kill switch.

Has anyone taken their car safety to this extreme to install one in their LS? I'm not going to for obvious lack of technical know how but it might be something for you cool cats to try out.

Harass me if you must but this is what I was thinking about.

You won't need a "kill switch" in the LS; or any modern car. The chip in the key acts just like the switch. I had one in my 64 1/2 Mustang.

I did the same thing Pete did:

... get one of the i home covers/adaptors ( the ones they supply to make each ipod fit better on the dock) to go over the cut out.

on my expedition I put my amp control knob in my ash try and popped the lighter out and replaced it with the amp remote switch... complete control of amp hidden perfectly away.

I'm digging the idea. I just didn't like the idea of my ipod being in the glove box when I had my truck. I came across how you cut just below the ash tray and cig lighter but I'm not a fan of cutting it up like that.

Thanks for the little tid bit on the kill switch. I guess that's why I've never heard of one for today's cars.

I'll attempt to take a pic of my ashtray with the ipod kinda sitting in there all chill and :q:q:q:q.

I have a kill switch hidden in the A/C vent on my '89 Mustang that is wired to kill power to the fuel pump relay. pull the A/C vent out and it's easy to get too and totally hidden. I have an alarm on there too, but wanted to take a step further in case someone defeated it. My .02 :p

If you are referring to mounting the cradle/plug INSIDE the ashtray, I'm thinking your ipod will be in front of the double din screen when it's installed.

shouldnt be, gen 2 ash trays are way different than a 1st gen ask tray, his ash tray is the whole width of the slide out (instead of half like the slide out like yours) and its really shallow, like .5", then the cig sockets are located about the ash tray but they stay flush with the dash under a flip up panel, hell it shouldn't even block the climate controls.

Here is kinda what I'm talking about. I wasn't saying to mount it there, although that is a possibility. This is with the ash tray insert removed. It seems if I cut the back of this tray that the insert sits in, it will easily fit an ipod and possibly leave room to conceal the amp remote controller in there also.

if you want a sweet place to mount you amps remote knob, you could remove the cig lighter and socket from above the ash tray, and place it there. when was the last time you ever had three things plugged into all of the sockets at once? most bass knobs can be taken apart pretty easily, and you can cut a small piece of plastic to cover the face of the panel that the socket was in (you will need to dremmel around the bump for the ash tray light). drill a new hole, then remount the knob to the piece of plastic and use double sticky tape to hold it to the face. since it is a lot more recessed there, the door can still close over most knobs (if it doesn't, then trim that turd down a little)

Thanks for the suggestion @1LoudLS. I'm just a big thinker when it comes to planning stuff out such as this. Once I finish my brakes and pay everything off, hopefully the new year will bring me a new system in my car.

Thanks again gang.
